Yesterday morning, President Berisha paid a visit to the television tower, or as it is otherwise called, the Pearl of the East, which with its antenna reaches a height of 486 meters, the first of its kind in Asia and the third in the world. Upon arrival, President Berisha and the delegation he leads visited the processing zone for export goods in Cing Cao, or, as it is called, the Arab. The area of this zone is half the size of Hong Kong, or one third of Singapore. In this zone, 9.1 billion dollars have been invested by large multinational companies, as well as 5 billion dollars by the Chinese themselves. At the meeting organized at the center of this zone, President Berisha stressed that this zone is evidence of the great efforts made by this city and China for its rapid realization. A visit was then made to the company producing office electronic equipment, with a capacity of 400,000 fax machines per year; 10 percent of production is for the Chinese market, while the rest is for foreign markets. PRESIDENT BERISHA WITH PRESIDENT ZEMIN AND --- THE SPEAKER OF THE PEOPLE'S ASSEMBLY QAO SHI Question: Mr. President, you have just completed your official visit to the People's Republic of China; how do you assess this visit? President Berisha: I consider my visit to the People's Republic of China very important and successful. I came to China at the invitation of the President of the People's Republic of China, Zemin. I take this opportunity to thank him warmly for this invitation and for the warm welcome he showed me during this visit. He came here determined and with the desire to raise to the highest level the relations and dialogue between our two countries. The People's Republic of China has given precious assistance to Albania and the Albanians, assistance that in many respects was red pordër and toward which an ungrateful attitude was held by the Albanian political leadership of that time. I have great pleasure in noting that during these years the relations between our two countries are rapidly entering a new phase, characterized by a high quality of very positive results and which opened a new page in the cooperative relations between our two countries. In the talks I held with President Zemin, I fully agreed that dialogue and cooperation between our two countries should be expanded in all fields, both political, economic cooperation, and other areas of common interest. We discussed international problems, the worrying problems of our country; I especially asked the Chinese President, and he promised me a study of the real situation that Albania presents in Chinese views. We also discussed the settlement of relations in the financial, military, cultural, etc. fields. President Zemin assured me that he and his government view friendship and cooperation with Albania with special interest and that they will encourage Chinese investment and comprehensive cooperation. We also discussed the debt issue, about which I told him that we recognize the inherited debt, despite the fact that we are not responsible for that debt, which the dictatorship created in the last years of its rule. We decided that the two governments should discuss this issue. In the end I invited President Zemin to visit Albania, an invitation which he accepted with pleasure. We also discussed regional issues, where I presented with concern the situation in the Balkans, how it is developing specifically, especially the escalation and the Dayton agreement. The Chinese President assured me that he fully supports a peaceful solution to the Kosovo problem. It is valuable in this regard and will make its voice heard in the Security Council and other institutions and will engage for a fair solution to this problem. He also agreed with our view on the negative position and the dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade in the presence of a third party. For my part I assured President Zemin that Albania is a friend of its own China. In the friendly meeting I also had with the Chairman of the National Assembly of the People's Republic of China, Zhao Shi, we talked and discussed the relations between Albania and China. The Chairman of the National Assembly assured me that the Assembly of China is fully interested in the development of friendship and cooperation with Albania. We said that he has touched on Chinese changes, the reform course, the Albanian leadership, and their orientations toward us. But we preserve the most sincere and genuine feelings, and in this visit to China we felt how real and deep the relations between our two countries are. I leave convinced that a new cooperation is being created between our two countries and that there is further progress in this direction. China in these last 30 years has made a revolution, I would say just as in the past. One was the so-called cultural revolution, to introduce the Lin Biao type, which was also embraced by the communist clique in Tirana headed by Enver Hoxha. But after this revolution it engaged in the broad development of reforms under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping, where market freedom showed that the results are very great. This was shown by these last 17 years of China's development, which are extraordinarily impressive. If China today has a great future and rapid economic development, this is the most indisputable proof of the great values of market freedom, thanks to the energy of the great Chinese giant, which has now not only awakened but is moving at speed with a great step, its rapid step. For many years China has had the highest rates of development, and this is a great achievement of the Chinese people. What must be emphasized is that this reform course is certainly an extraordinarily broad policy in favor of peace and stability. Through dialogue, China has always resolved many issues it has had with its neighbors and has great cooperation with them, as well as with other countries.

Italian judicial authorities request information Only a few days after the Albanian justice decision over the 400,000-dollar scandal of “ZP”, another scandal involves the PS company “Progresi”. According to the newspaper “Albania”, this time it is the Italian judicial authorities that are investigating the company’s links with the Italian Mafia. The arrest in Italy for mafia activity of the Italian citizen Giovanni Battista, who was in a joint company with “Progresi”, served as the clue for this investigation. The joint company is called “Tirana Adriatik” import-export, based in Tirana and represented by the former chief editor of “ZP” and former director of the company “Progresi”, Përparim Xhiba. Italian justice officials are investigating an illegal trafficking operation for which Battista is accused. In the contract signed between the Italian mafioso and the company “Progresi”, it is stated that the company will carry passengers inside and outside the border, but this passenger transport appears to have been carried out inside and outside the law. According to the contract, the profits of this company are split 50/50, and the beneficiary of the Albanian side’s 50 percent appears to be the Economic Center of Injeksit “Progresi”. It seems that scandals are following the PS step by step. Now not only its past but also its present has been discredited in the most scandalous forms. The 400,000-dollar scandal was a warning, like the tip of the iceberg of corruption of the entire current PS, and so it turned out. After the arrest of two former PS deputies, also in Italy, one for document forgery and the other for prostitution exploitation, it is once again Italy that is setting a trap for the highest officials of this party. These are the people who shout and rant about corruption, the ones who swear that only their coming to power will bring corruption to an end. These are people who even today are entangled in the darkest and dirtiest affairs; those who in 1991 sank deeply into the swamp of corruption and brought the country into chaos, those who for 50 years legalized crime, corruption, and theft, now want to return to power. This visit aims to strengthen relations between our countries and further develop bilateral and regional cooperation. During his stay, President Arpad Genc will hold talks with President Sali Berisha and will have meetings with other high-ranking state personalities of the country.
