Kadare, a giant of Albanian letters

Berisha's telegram to Kadare Kadare, a giant of Albanian letters On the occasion of your 60th birthday, I wish to congratulate you warmly, and wish you a long life, health, and success in your work, which is so valuable for Albania and our entire nation. The name Ismail Kadare is today known not only by all Albanians, inside and outside Albania, but throughout the world as a giant of Albanian letters, as a connoisseur of the ancient values of Albanian civilization in the world and of the spiritual emancipation of our people in very difficult times for it, but also for the artistic pleasure he has given to generations of readers. I want to recall here that when censorship a cut every thread of free thought and the dictatorship did away with every opposition, Kadare's books became for Albanian intellectuals a powerful ray that cut through the darkness and illuminated the path of the Albanian writers under the dictatorship, discouraging hope and submission to oppression, ignorance, isolation and xenophobia. We have all witnessed that at a time when Kadare's books and phrases became the object of monstrous attacks from secret offices all the way to the Central Committee, the Albanian reader devoured them rapidly: teachers, doctors, agronomists, engineers and officers, researchers and professors, pensioners in the family hearth read and commented on them, because they would always find between the lines and in the subtext that which they thought and desired, which the dictatorship did not allow. We were all proud that Kadare's great art carried the messages of Albanian-ness and of the human spirit to millions of readers all over the world in the most diverse languages. I also take this opportunity to thank you for the full support you gave from the very beginning to the difficult processes of overthrowing the dictatorship and establishing the democratic open society in Albania, Albania's difficult efforts to take the place it deserves in the large family of advanced European nations, the aspirations of all patriotic Albanians to continuously consolidate democratic achievements, to learn from the bitter past and to move firmly forward. Once again I wish you a happy birthday and good work so that our literature and world literature may be given even greater artistic value in the future.

Nikoll Lesi's newest fraud

Statement by the spokesperson of the Democratic Party of Albania Statement by the spokesperson of the Democratic Party of Albania Nikoll Lesi's newest fraud Mr. Nikoll Lesi, through absurd newspapers against the PD and its leaders, deceives the ordinary public in a terrible way, because, never in any place and under any circumstance, has any person from the PD made him an offer for cooperation or support. All of his claims are simply monstrous lies by means of which he seeks to divert attention from the scandals of Serbian financing that have stained public conscience throughout. The PD has absolutely no need to cooperate with a figure of the category of Nikoll Lesi and his stage and does not hinder anyone with illegal methods, pressure and blackmail. The PD, while respecting the law, respects all those who fight for democracy and is open to cooperation only with them.

The Socialists in the hands of the communists

Those who will go to vote at the polling station where the candidate for parliament will be Enver Hoxha's former personal secretary, Farih Simani, even if they vote against him, will still feel offended. To claim that a political party and a district's voters will once again accept Hoxha's cabinet to represent them in parliament is the greatest provocation that can be made to them, and at the same time contempt for all the suffering and hardship that the dictatorship brought upon those people. The Socialists in the hands of the communists Those who will go to vote at the polling station where the candidate for parliament will be the former personal secretary of Enver Hoxha, Farih Simani, even if they vote against him, will still feel offended. To claim that a political party and the voters of a district will once again accept Hoxha's cabinet to represent them in parliament is the greatest provocation that can be made to them and at the same time contempt for all the suffering and hardship that the dictatorship brought upon those people. If in the past the dictatorial reminiscences of the Socialists have been expressed theoretically or through votes, as in the case when they did not vote for the law on human rights, this time their return to various figures of Albanians is concrete. Bringing the dictator's cabinet toward parliament through its presidencies, the closest people and the zealous servants is an attempt to remove the red line in parliament. The Socialists want absolutely to represent within the great Albanian medium that which has been suspended by law as unacceptable to Albanian society. Three years ago the Albanian parliament voted against the presence of the Communist Party in Albanian politics. The Socialists then remained without an ally, while the Albanians were relieved of a symbol of ferocity and oppression. The removal of the communists was the first step toward cleansing Albanian society and an invitation for those involved in the crimes of this party to repent and ask forgiveness. The representatives of the Albanians in parliament on that day, when they voted against the Communist Party, could not have imagined that three years later they would have Hoxha's close collaborators back in parliament, and precisely as a token of the Socialist Party for the Albanians of the year 2000. They certainly had their own expectations, but not to hear their discussions about the socialist program or whether it would maintain the pace of reform with governing practices. The resurrection of the dictator and his nomination by name can only mean that in the Socialist Party it is no longer the socialists who are in charge, but the communists. They show that Ruçi, Nano, Pollumbi cannot take power through development and perspective, but only through a return to the past. And Albanians already know the methods of the past. But it is not only the voters of Gjirokastra who were humiliated by Ruçi's list. In the same situation will also be the voters of Kuçova, where the candidate for deputy is the closest collaborator of Nexhmije Hoxha, Vasilaq Furin, or the voters of the villages of Vlora who have as Socialist Party representative the lawyer Fatmir Zani. Each of these electoral districts will have very little chance of choosing people the Albanian socialists offend. No, not a little. There they will be reminded of the tyranny of '90, February '91, March '92, and they will understand that communism was hit hard, but it is not dead. They will understand that in Albanian politics they are still operating with the same forms and methods to impose its presence on Albanians. They will understand that the Socialists do not stand as pillars of the state, and that the Socialists are their exact continuation, and that this governance is inverted. The Socialists have no opportunity to restore the dictator's monument in Tirana. They are putting it on their lists through Ruçi and Nano in order to attract votes in the villages of Gjirokastra, Berat, Vlora, etc. Thus the Socialist leadership shows that it has completely eliminated the reformist group from their party. Ordinary Socialists will not have the chance to choose from their own side.

Xanone reconfirms the financing of “KJ” from Serbia

Interview given to BBC radio Xanone reconfirms the financing of “KJ” from Serbia When and how did you learn that PS deputies and the newspaper Koha Jonë are financed by the Serbian Republic? Last summer I removed a former security agent who is still active within the secret apparatus of the Socialist Party. I met him at the house of a Socialist Party cadre. He gave me this information, asking me to use it a few months later, that is now, as it seems, linked to a strategic purpose, with the approaching elections. Was there any witness in your conversations with this former security agent? There was one witness, who was also a security agent, or not exactly an agent, but a person close to that environment who however was not present all the time. Did this former agent ask you to pay him? I want to say that I have given him certain matters. How much was that amount? I can say that I gave things worth up to 400 thousand lire, in order to have good relations with him, to receive firsthand information which he for a particular reason wanted to pass on to me. What is this particular reason? The fact that I am an Italian journalist, because when something is published by a Western journalist it takes on a different value. Have you managed to verify this person's information? He gave me, or more exactly showed me, two documents. Were these documents in Italian or in Albanian? They were in Albanian. Yes, how did you manage to understand them? We translated them. Who translated them? The person himself. And who guarantees that he did not translate them in a different way and that the documents were fake? I have no doubt at all and for several reasons. So, Mr. Xanone, you do not have material proof. Perhaps I do have it too, but I cannot bring it out because, in some ways, I too feel obliged by a few requests. Requests from whom? Requests from the people who passed this information to me. Mr. Xanone, you are closed (Continues on page 3)

Lesi's gang threatens the director of the newspaper “Albania”

Lesi's gang threatens the director of the newspaper “Albania” Three of Nikoll Lesi's bodyguards have threatened the director of the newspaper “Albania”. After the publication of the facts that the newspaper “KJ” was financed by Serbia, Lesi's gang went to the editorial office of “Albania” and one of them threatened its newspaper director. In addition, repeated threats have been directed at the family by telephone. This fact best shows what the director of the newspaper “KJ” represents. Those who continue to make noise about press freedom and about supposed pressure from the authorities on “KJ” are nothing more than a group using criminal methods that threaten not only press freedom in Albania but are also in the service of those who trample on the freedom and democracy of all Albanians. It is time for the competent authorities to act to protect press freedom in Albania and the freedom of ordinary citizens from these kinds of criminal gangs.

Nikoll Lesi defends himself by inventing slander

The Secretary General of the Presidency, Mr. Kolec Topalli, clarifies: Nikoll Lesi defends himself by inventing slander - The Secretary General of the Presidency, Mr. Kolec Topalli, clarifies: Regarding today's statement by Mr. Nikolle Lesi, Director and co-owner of the newspaper “Koha Jonë”, that the Secretary General of the Presidency has put pressure on him to call the PD and the government in his newspaper, I clarify that about 3 weeks ago, by means of a phone call, Mr. Lesi asked me for a meeting which I refused, but I agreed to receive him like any citizen in my office. During the meeting he said that he wanted to write a letter asking for a meeting with the President of the Republic and a request that a letter be sent so that it would be ensured, or that his request would be brought to the attention of the President. On my part I assured him that all requests, including his request, are known to the President, therefore he had the right to make this request like any other citizen. That was the whole meeting. On my part no kind of request has been made to (Continues on page 3)
