The points of the parties' roundtable declaration have been taken into account
Interview with the Secretary General of the DP, Mr. Tritan Shehu
Last night, shortly after the start of yesterday's legislative session, the session chair announced that, at the proposal of opposition representatives, the special committee for examining the draft election law “For the National Assembly and local government” had been expanded by two members. What is important and equally necessary to stress in order to calm the troubled spirit of certain political forces is that, although with the addition of the two members proposed by the opposition and the Socialist Party this committee now has more than 50 percent of its total deputies, it nevertheless has no right to make changes to the draft law without the approval of the law committee, the parliamentary documentation and the presidency of the Assembly. This means that, regardless of Mr. Preç Zogaj’s initial outcry, nothing has changed from what was decided in the January 12 session of this year. Besides, Mr. Zogaj now has no reason to leave the parties’ roundtable again, because all the opposition’s remarks on the draft law in question have been taken into account, fully reflecting the points of the parties’ roundtable declaration. Now the only thing left to do is for the government to present the draft law in parliament with the revisions made at the parties’ roundtable. According to the notice from the presidency of parliament, the special committee chaired by Spartak Ngjela will examine the draft law and then it will be submitted to the plenary session. Answers to journalists’ questions:
Question: The electoral law has just been numerically approved with 74 votes in favor. Why was the session blocked and why was the voting procedure postponed until the evening, while the official announcement spoke of its approval in the morning session?
Mr. Shehu: Last night, shortly after the start of yesterday's legislative session, the session chair announced that, at the proposal of opposition representatives, the special committee for examining the draft election law “For the National Assembly and local government” had been expanded by two members.
