When the red front was born
What was said at the secret meeting of the leaders of PS, PSD and PAD
EDI PALOKA
It was verified yesterday that the peaceful offers for the uprising of the left’s voice, made after the shortcomings of the amendment to the election law, are true. Indeed, they are much broader than had been announced. Not only the socialists have been involved, but also other allies of theirs. Thus, not only Mr. Agolli, but also Mr. Zogaj have sided with Nano.
It seems that Mr. Islami has told the Kosovo official that "the only way to remove Berisha from power is a popular revolt", which is an unacceptable stance against a democratic state. He made this claim once again at the secret meeting he had with the Greek foreign minister Papulias. For this purpose, last Monday at the home of a friend of theirs, near the center of Tirana, Mr. Islami, the chairman of PSD, Skënder Gjinushi, the chairman of PAD, Neritan Ceka, and the recently returned from Greece, Mr. Dritëro Agolli, met. A foreign adviser to Mr. Nano also took part in the meeting. Witnesses to the gathering, according to our sources, although they try to deny it, are several well-known intellectuals from the opposition.
At this meeting Mr. Islami presented a preliminary scenario for the organization and success of the uprising. First of all, he insisted that the discontent of Albanians with this electoral law be widely exploited, that the first peaceful demonstrations be treated as popular rallies and receive broad coverage from foreign media. Then, according to the scenario, the radicalization of the demonstrations should follow, accompanied by bloody clashes with the police. For this purpose, according to our sources, the organizers of the demonstrations should be supported by groups of extremist youths and provocateurs should be used. Furthermore, it has been calculated that the tension created will lead to hasty reactions from the authorities, which will serve as an argument for intervention by international bodies against the Albanian government.
Part of this plan, according to the same sources, was also a further rapprochement with certain left-wing circles in Europe, as well as the use of contacts with official Athens. The name of Mr. Papulias was mentioned several times at the meeting, and there was talk about the influence that Greek diplomacy could exert in some Western chanceries. The role of some foreign foundations and organizations that could present the situation in Albania as a deep political and social crisis was also mentioned.
It is not known whether this platform was fully approved by all the participants, but it is certain that strong positions were expressed at the meeting against participation in the elections without fundamental changes to the electoral law. In particular, the need for a "joint opposition action" was emphasized. What stands out is the fact that this action includes not only the socialists, but also PSD and PAD, thus creating a new political axis of the left.
