120 thousand citizens of Tirana celebrate the victory
Celebrations on the occasion of March 22, the victory of democracy
March 22, the day of freedom
March 22, 1992, is the day of freedom and the death of dictatorship. Four years ago the Albanians split themselves in two, put an end to the communist regime, liberated themselves and Albania from a difficult situation and gave it the light of democracy. At 11:30 in Skanderbeg Square, at the jubilee rally of the victory of democracy, tens of thousands of participants gathered, shouting the names of the DP and President Berisha. Along with patriotic songs and the shouts of those present in the square, the laughter of children and the friendly conversation of people meeting acquaintances could be heard, a festive day and a joyful atmosphere. Albanians from north and south, young and old, townspeople and villagers, neatly dressed, poured like a waterfall into the main boulevard, where citizens were heading to celebrate the day of victory. The 18th DP government has just begun and the DP has greeted the participants, while the main boulevard was almost full. The ceremony had just begun and the chairman of the DP, Prof. Dr. Sali Berisha, had taken the podium, when the square burst into applause and cheers. He greeted the participants with the words: "Dear democrats and democratic women, citizens of Tirana and of all Albania, brothers and sisters wherever you are today, united in this square and on this day in celebration of the victory of democracy, of the overthrow of dictatorship, with the most boundless gratitude I greet you, you and your families". Mr. Berisha greeted the chairmen of the DP who had taken part in this fourth anniversary of the victory of democracy. He then handed the chairman of the DP of Tirana, Mr. Leonard Demi, the emblem of the victory of March 22. Later in his speech President Berisha, giving an account of the four years of DP governance, said that the DP government, with its own forces and without any help, avoided the catastrophe of famine, stopped inflation and opened the way for the recovery of the economy. He said that in these four years the Albanian government has created 22 thousand private enterprises, has allowed foreign investments to enter up to 220 million dollars, 25 years ago, has enabled wage and pension increases of 35-44 percent and village pensions fivefold. Berisha mentioned that DP governance has also had successes in the fields of education, health, road construction and social centers. An important place in his speech was occupied by the Kosovo issue, its independence, which he said is the undeniable right of the Albanians. Berisha said that the DP supports a peaceful solution to the Kosovo issue. According to him, the most precious thing in these four years is the victory over oneself, the building of the free human being. In this context, he said that free citizens are capable of doing everything. Berisha again accused the opposition and Fatos Nano of serving, through civil disobedience, the anti-Albanian cause of Belgrade. Mr. Berisha concluded his speech with the words: "We will defend with all our forces the victory of March 22. Let us unite for Europe. Let us move forward with confident steps toward a European future for Albania." After President Berisha's speech, the rally continued with an artistic program and folk songs and dances. A large number of high-ranking state and party personalities took part in the rally. (Other news on pages 4-5)
