2 April commemorated Shkodër, Rozafa of freedom Speech of President Berisha Five years ago, on the morning of 2 April 1991, the free citizens of Shkodër, outraged by the violence of the police and the secret service, took part in a peaceful mass protest. The purpose of the demonstration was to protest against the decision of the then communist government to manipulate the vote of citizens in the referendum on political pluralism, through brutal political and police pressure. The events of 2 April in Shkodër became the symbol of Albanians' resistance against violence and injustice. The President of the Republic, Sali Berisha, took part in the commemorative ceremony and stressed that 2 April remains one of the most important dates in Albanian freedom. He praised the sacrifice of the fallen and the courage of the citizens of Shkodër, underlining that the blood shed for freedom will never be forgotten. Berisha said that Albanian democracy was strengthened through the resilience of ordinary people, who refused to live under fear any longer. He declared that 2 April is a permanent reminder to institutions and political forces to defend the vote, the law, and the freedoms of citizens. (Continued on page 2)
