Full support from the EU for Albania

Press conference by Mr. Hans Van Den Broek, European Union Commissioner for Foreign Policy EU: The opposition must act responsibly The senior representative of the Parliament and of the institutions of the European Union, Mr. Hans van den Broek, speaking about the situation in Albania, said that the new post-election government after 26 May had made important steps toward the functioning of democracy in the country and the rule of law. Expressing confidence that the autumn local and parliamentary elections will be held in line with European standards, he said that the Albanian government has begun the necessary reforms. According to him, the opposition must take part in political life and behave responsibly. Considering a climate of cooperation essential for the country’s European future, he stressed that EU assistance and cooperation will continue. He also said that stability in Albania is important for the region. In democracy the presence of the opposition is vital, but the opposition must understand its obligations. The opposition’s withdrawal from the vote-counting process and the parliamentary elections caused unnecessary tensions but did not seriously undermine the official bodies that have promised their contribution; the opposition should take part in the local elections. Only in this way can development be achieved for the people who seek improvement. PAGE 3

The European Commission is working on signing an agreement with Albania
