President Clinton recommends extending most-favored-nation status for Albania

American President Bill Clinton recommended on Monday extending most-favored-nation status in trade to Albania and several countries of Eastern Europe and Asia, for which the human rights situation shows that they are moving toward a significant achievement. The draft bill would extend this status for one year to these countries and would take the place of the previous German aid arrangement, which was granted only for a six-month period. A U.S. congressional official said the bill aims to give Albania economic development through normal trade relations. He added that until recently this status had been enjoyed only by some countries in Eastern Europe and Asia, which had until then benefited from the regular import system in the United States. Other amendments to this law place Albania on a favorable footing with other developing countries. For both countries, Albania and Moldova, America of President Clinton, as the correspondent of the Albanian Telegraphic Agency states, has presented the most favorable form of status for these countries, and among them are also the Alliance, Moldova, Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and Macedonia, receiving a favorable response from Congress. The U.S. congressional project was first announced by the office of New York Congressman Gilman, head of the House Committee on International Relations, and the secretary of his office, Kristian Dapkus, told ATSH that President Clinton has stated that the expansion of this status for these countries will contribute to increasing U.S. exports and serves to consolidate reforms. He said that the status will create better conditions for U.S. exports and that the countries benefiting from this status, including Albania, will be treated with certain tariff privileges on imports of American goods. According to him, this decision is also related to the progress Albania has made on the path of economic and political reforms. American representatives emphasize that this status is considered an encouragement for the development of trade relations and the acceleration of reforms in Albania.

Red Front - the island of solitude

Today's session of the Red Front showed at least some of the comparative measures of their miserable scale. The number of participants best shows how far this anti-popular and antihistorical alliance has fallen. It has now been abandoned by the overwhelming majority, not only by its former supporters, but also by those militants who once placed their hopes in this alliance. The very appearance of the square, pale, dispersed and weary, was the clearest proof that Albanians have chosen the path of civility and democracy. Those who once fueled this movement with fervor now look at it with a critical and disappointed eye. The Red Front is turning into an island of solitude, where only a few lost voices repeat calls that are now meaningless for Albanian society. By contrast, the majority of citizens are turning to the alternative of reform, stability and democratic order.
