Yesterday in the People's Assembly The law on amendments to the law on elections of local government bodies was approved in principle, article by article and as a whole by majority vote. In the approval of the law, some of the decisions reached at the table of the parliamentary parties were given legal form, as well as some of the shortcomings observed in the preparation and implementation of the parliamentary elections of 26 May. The law presented by ODHI concerns the administration of commissions, the law on genocide, the voting process and the form of ballot papers. Yesterday the President of the Republic, Dr. Sali Berisha, decreed and promulgated the amendments and additions to the Electoral Code for the general elections of local government bodies. The changes to the law on local elections were related to the debates held in Parliament concerning the amendments proposed by the opposition parties. In the President's decree it is stated that the right to, and holding of, periodic elections for local government bodies constitute one of the key elements of democracy.

Statement by the PD spokesman Our country has just managed to overcome the challenge of the local elections, and it is now meeting the next challenge by carrying out an election campaign with pluralist participation. But what is once again being proven is the Socialists' inability to present themselves to the electorate with an alternative and with programs. They seek to replace political debate with false statements and accusations against political opponents. This behavior shows that their only goal is to intensify political life and obstruct democratic standards.
