Progress in electoral reform
The American Republican Institute values the changes in the Albanian electoral law
Electoral hesitation
Parliament approved last Monday as well as in the press conference distributed in Washington several issues related to the electoral code, with the aim of respecting human rights and the democratic process. This analysis by the American Republican Institute was presented after discussions with representatives of political parties in Albania and with other actors of public life.
According to IRI representatives, these changes include an important step toward agreement and acceptance of an electoral process and free and fair elections in Albania. IRI considers these changes an important step taken by the Albanian government to improve the electoral process and to create a more balanced system for administering elections.

In Albania, the losers are the boycotters
Article in the Swiss daily Neue Zurcher Zeitung
Now, after the parliamentary elections in Albania held on 26 May and after three weeks of unrest, is the defeated opposition still maintaining the same demagogically unreasonable stance it has had in parliament? By the language of violence? To deprive it of its rights and duties through an extra-parliamentary body. Should it not live?
Now, after the parliamentary elections in Albania held on 26 May and after three weeks of unrest and turmoil incited by violence, the defeated opposition is maintaining the same demagogically unreasonable stance it had in favor of a total boycott of the institutions. It continues to insist on the annulment of the May 26 elections and their complete repetition.
The attacks against the government of Fatos Nano are as unusual as those of the right against the Albanian socialists. Instead of constructive work and parliament, the defeated opposition continues to seek its truth in the streets and in improvised platforms. This has pushed the country away from the path of democratic development and focused attention on artificial crises.
The whole issue now is no longer about the election result but about accepting the rules of the democratic game. Most of the public opinion and international observers have considered the process an important step forward.
The publication in the Swiss newspaper Neue Zurcher Zeitung points out that Albania’s return to normality requires participation in the institutions born of the vote and not attempts to replace them with a so-called “soviets”?
