President Berisha received Mr. Claudio Haggi The President of the Republic, Sali Berisha, received the President of the European People's Party, Mr. Claudio Haggi. It is understood that at the meeting, which took place yesterday, President Berisha familiarized him with the electoral process under way in our country and with the progress of economic reforms. “The government and the current majority are devoting special importance to the country’s economic development, improving the economic and social situation of citizens and consolidating the new democratic institutions. For the 20 October elections, all measures have been taken to create free and secret voting,” President Berisha said. Regarding this, the President of the Republic informed the chairman of the EPP that the opposition has used up all means aimed at destabilizing the country. For his part, Mr. Haggi praised President Berisha’s important role in Albania’s development and stressed that the EPP will support the efforts of the PD to strengthen its role within the sphere of European political opinion. Claudio Haggi particularly praised the progress Albania has achieved in the economic and institutional sphere, describing it as “the success story” in Eastern Europe. He expressed his conviction that the Democratic Party and President Berisha will achieve new victories in the upcoming elections. At the end, he conveyed to President Berisha the invitation to take part in the EPP conference to be held in Munich on 26 October 1996.
