Bulgarian Prime Minister Vidanov resigns
Bulgarian Prime Minister Vidanov has announced his resignation. This was made known yesterday in a communiqué from the Council of Ministers in Sofia. Vidanov will continue to play a central role in the government as Secretary General of the socialist party. Vidanov’s deputy said that he is stepping down as prime minister in the name of reformed socialism.
The prime minister’s resignation statement says that the socialist government in Bulgaria came to power two years ago and began efforts to pull the country out of the crisis, but the results have been insufficient. According to the communiqué, the government must leave in order to pave the way for the formation of a new governing majority. According to the statement, Vidanov remains in the government as Secretary General of the Socialist Party. The decision to resign was also taken against the backdrop of the unrest of recent days, when the opposition organized large demonstrations against the government.
On the other hand, the President of Bulgaria, Zhelju Zhelev, and the leader of the democratic opposition have called for the dissolution of parliament and the holding of early elections.
Prime Minister Vidanov made these statements after meeting with President Zhelev.
Following the prime minister’s request to delay ratification of the new agreement with the International Monetary Fund, political pressure on the government has also increased.
In Sofia, the economic and financial situation has worsened significantly and student and worker protests have been growing.

Tirana demands the leadership’s removal and the convocation of a congress
The split in the Socialist Party becomes institutionalized
The split among intellectuals
The internal struggle in the Socialist Party continues, taking on wider and wider dimensions every day. The structure of the PS in the Tirana district declared yesterday during a press conference that it is demanding the removal from the post of Secretary General of the party of Spartak Ngjela [?], the splitter of the ranks of the socialists, and is also calling for his replacement with an honest figure accepted by the entire membership.
The chairman of the organizational committee of the Tirana forum said that the split in the PS came as a result of the irresponsible actions of the central leadership and the exclusionary policy toward local structures.
According to the statement, the Tirana branch will ask that the governing forums address the issue of holding an extraordinary congress to resolve the crisis.
At this press conference it was said that the situation in the party is very serious and that the socialist base is demanding deep changes in the leadership.

The responsibility of intellectuals
Veçan Haveli
In these difficult days and in the political upheaval our society is facing, the role of the intellectual becomes even more important. The intellectual cannot be either silent or submissive to evil. He must take moral and civic responsibility to speak the truth, defend freedom, and denounce injustice.
In the history of nations, intellectuals have been the conscience of society. When politics goes astray, when power becomes corrupt, and when citizens lose confidence, free speech and critical thought are the forces that can restore balance.
Today our country needs clear and responsible voices more than ever.
