The President’s spokesperson, Salih Sadir, said last night that the President of the Republic, Sali Berisha, and his Turkish counterpart, Sulejman Demirel, spoke by telephone on 21 March 1997. In this telephone conversation, President Demirel expressed his condolences to President Berisha for the loss of human life in the recent unrest in Albania. President Berisha, for his part, told President Demirel that the situation is calming down and is coming under control. The two presidents then discussed an intensification of relations between the two countries and our peoples. President Berisha thanked the Turkish President for the contribution being made by the Turkish forces assigned to the peacekeeping mission in Bosnia in helping the Albanian population of Sarajevo, who have been in Albania for a long time. President Demirel stated that the Turkish government and people have always followed Albania’s development and that of its people with affection and are ready to help in moments like these. Albania’s territorial integrity is inviolable
To preserve national sovereignty and independence, with heart and soul we wholeheartedly and in solidarity endorse the statement by the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Adem Jashari[?], made on 21 of this month to the press, in which he welcomes the decision of the contact group in support of Albania’s independence and its state and territorial integrity. The supreme demand of our people is to firmly defend the inviolability of the borders and of the territorial integrity of the Albanian state. We are following with deep concern the grave and bloody events in Albania, which are being exploited by various malicious and anti-Albanian circles to further their own ends. They seek the destruction of Albania’s independence and territorial integrity, and the disappearance of the Albanian nation from its ethnic lands. Therefore, the intellectuals and creators of Kosovo firmly reject all ideas and theories of dividing and dismembering Albania and call for the preservation of its inviolability. To this end, we call on the international community and democratic forces in Europe and the world to help stabilize the situation in Albania as quickly as possible, while respecting its sovereignty.

Albanians in Macedonia are not indifferent to developments in Albania
The President of the PPDSh, Arbër Xhaferi, sent to the President of the Republic of Albania, Mr. Sali Berisha
“With deep concern we are following the events that are unfolding without any political discipline and in a climate of complete confusion. Consensus and democracy will not, for a period, have the language of reason, but the blind force of madness. The Albanian community in Macedonia cannot be indifferent to developments in Albania, because it experiences them both spiritually and historically. We are sadly observing that part of the political forces are failing to act responsibly in these critical moments. We are convinced that only a political solution and a return of the institutions can bring the country out of this situation.”

“With deep concern we are following the developments and events taking place in Albania.
