PD chooses peace, extremists choose terror
The National Council of the Democratic Party set out yesterday the points for victory in a new triumph for the right in Albania, stressing that terrorism, as a weapon of the defeated, will in no way diminish the Democrats’ triumph in the elections of 29 June.
The National Council of the Democratic Party yesterday set out the points for a new victory for the right in Albania, stressing that terrorism, as a weapon of the defeated, will in no way diminish the Democrats’ triumph in the elections of 29 June. President Berisha yesterday told all members of the Democratic Party not to be discouraged at all by the failed attack against him in Shkallnuer, stressing that terrorism must in no way prevent the Democrats from campaigning with great intensity right up to election day. Berisha welcomed the fact that the voters of Shkallnuer stayed until the end to hear him, despite the panic caused by the bomb, calling this the best message Albanians can give politicians. Yesterday, the PD National Council put forward the best platform and some of its most capable people, who will put an end to the winter of national rebellion, restore peace to the country and establish order, which has been violated by the armed gangs of the left. Restoring order in a short time, the most urgent demand of the Albanian electorate, was identified as the main priority of the emergency program that the PD is offering to all Albanians. The PD thus becomes the first political force in the country to offer Albanians ways and guarantees for resolving the crisis into which the country was plunged by those who have not accepted their defeat at the ballot box for even a single day. The full list of people who will run in all electoral districts of Albania is expected to be approved on Sunday, except in those that will be unassigned districts or where there will be joint candidates with the allied parties of the Union for Democracy. Democracy. The previous day, this powerful alliance of the right had announced at a joint press conference its full confidence in a decisive victory in the 29 June elections, from which the majority that will form the next government will emerge. The Democrats’ allies declared that the Democratic Party would play the role of the locomotive, as the most powerful force that will prevent the authors and protagonists of the rebellion from taking Albania’s and the Albanian people’s fate into their hands. Although it knows well who set the country ablaze and who threatened it with the terrorists preparing the election campaign throughout Albania, the Democratic Party and its allies have once again called on the socialists and other left-wing parties to sign the social pact, meaning fair political competition, peace and not violence. The PD National Council’s support for this point comes at a time when left-wing extremists have stepped up their efforts to commit a terrorist crime before the elections, activating all their criminal elements, from bombings in Tirana and Elbasan, to armed committees in several other cities in Albania, and culminating in the most extreme act—the attack in which a Greek terrorist [?] attempted to kill President Berisha with a grenade. The Democrats will face these grave and increasingly savage acts with the strength of their people, who have chosen the path of political change and to compete in democracy’s only contest: elections. The PD, the only party so far to have sincerely acknowledged its responsibilities to the electorate, is showing Albanians the way to achieve their victory over the rebellion, which cost the country’s development so dearly, and all that Albania and its people have made clear about who will receive their votes next. The rallies to come in Kavajë, Durrës, Elbasan and Shkodër, the rallies of President Berisha and those of other Democratic Party leaders, including the stance of the residents of Prrashnjit even after that terrorist [?], are the best answer Albanians can give to the people about how Albania can be saved. One such opportunity is today in Tirana, where the capital’s residents will express their position at 18:30, to move forward and support this country after 50 years, and now to set out on the new path of development and democracy. The Socialists’ election rally in Elbasan is canceled
Nano canceled the election rally in Elbasan. It had been planned for 5 June in one of the social and cultural venues in the city, in accordance with the written request submitted to the Municipality within the legal deadlines for holding political activities. It was also withdrawn by the chairman of the PS in Elbasan, who explained that it would be held at another time. The postponement of this party’s election rally has aroused considerable suspicion

The Council of Europe condemns terrorist acts
Fisher: “Undoubtedly, the bomb attacks in Tirana (...) are aimed at destabilizing the country and compromising the holding of free and fair elections on 29 June”
STRASBOURG – The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Leni Fisher, yesterday condemned the series of attacks that have threatened Albania in recent days.
“Undoubtedly, the bomb attacks in Tirana (...) of free and fair elections on 29 June,” Fisher said yesterday in a statement. According to her, “the success of the forthcoming elections is an essential interest for the future of Albania and the entire continent, and the parties bear a great responsibility for their conduct.”
Two bombs exploded in Tirana on Monday. The first injured 20 people at midday, in a bar in the city center, while the second injured eight people in the evening, near a bus station.
On Wednesday, Albanian President Sali Berisha, concerned by an attempted attack during an election meeting of the Democratic Party, called for early elections on 29 June.
EDU leaders send Berisha their best wishes
Following the foiled attempt on the President of Albania
“We are very pleased that the criminal act against your life failed.” This was stated yesterday in messages sent to President Berisha by the leading figures of the European Democratic Union (EDU), Alois Mok, Volfgang Grobruk and Aleksis Vintontak. “We are convinced,” they say, “that the difficult situation in your country after 50 years of brutal communist rule will change. Your people need you to lead them further toward a consolidated multiparty democracy and a market economy,” the message concludes.
Victory through free elections
The terrorist act in Shkallnuër, Berisha said yesterday at the meeting of the National Council of the DP, has not weakened my resolve at all; on the contrary, we must campaign all the more to bring Albania out of this situation, because this is the only way to respond to the problems the country is experiencing today. It is the only way to solve these problems, the best way, the most vital way
