Meanwhile, the people most likely responsible for the bloodshed are faced with incontrovertible proof that there was a typically communist plan to plunge Tirana and all of Albania into terror, even though the former Albanian communists have not yet officially taken power. Justice Minister Spartak Ngjela said yesterday at a press conference that Prime Minister Fino had threatened him with imprisonment, at a time when Tirana Police Chief Pashk Tusha was saying he would seek prison sentences for the editors of the newspapers “RD” and “Albania.” These facts, in complete correlation with one another, complete the criminal picture of the event that shook Albania and revived the fear of the country’s dark descent into a new communist dictatorship. Fino’s haste to bare his teeth even at a member of the National Reconciliation government is further proof that it was all the easier for him to strike at the ordinary protesters demonstrating in front of the Palace of Congresses. The statements made yesterday by the prime minister and his party, as well as by Tirana’s chief of police, speak eloquently of organized crime and reminded Albanians of the long-forgotten language of Enver Hoxha’s era. All the efforts to shroud the repeated political crime of July 3 in a fog only make the scheme that bloodied the capital’s streets clearer. Before threatening to jail journalists, Tirana’s chief of police should explain why, until July 3, his blue-uniformed officers had not fired at a single bandit, but on that very day unleashed fire on the supporters who were protesting peacefully. Meanwhile, PS leader Fatos Nano and Prime Minister Bashkim Fino must explain to Albanians how the police found the courage to fire on the crowd only when they were being directed by a Socialist leader. Those who have a lot to say about a few slaps against the opposition at the regrettable rally of March 28 are now dissatisfied with the police for not using greater force against people demonstrating peacefully. These repulsive examples have made Albanians sick, as they look at the blood of innocent victims and hear demands that the police should have been harsher with the protesters. And, once again, to prove that history repeats itself point for point, the day after the massacre brought another display of Socialist aggression: through their prime minister, they called for restraint and a calming of the situation. The same thing happened on April 2, when the then-prime minister, Fatos Nano, played the role of Enver: at first he bared his teeth, then, when he saw blood beginning to flow in the city, he started to back down. Thus yesterday’s seemingly milder statements by Bashkim Fino and the Socialist Party only confirm even more strongly their responsibility for the crime that stained Tirana’s streets red. They can in no way excuse the fact that there were armed people at the monarchists’ rally, since all their rallies, by terrorists and others alike, have been packed with antitank weapons and other heavy arms. Albanians can never forget the scenario on Albanian television’s “Fundi,” through which Nilo sought to distance himself from the massacre, which he had witnessed at close quarters. Likewise, only God saved several “RD” journalists from the bullets of Pashk’s police officers. Meanwhile, it is a journalist’s duty to be at the scene and write in the newspaper what they saw there. Tirana’s chief of police, Pashk Tusha, can communicate with our journalists only if he is prepared to come to the newsroom and offer his help in identifying the real perpetrators of the crime.
