This year, for Albanian citizens, crime appears to be more violent. The first signs of calm and normal life are giving way and being replaced by robberies, murders, beatings, bombs, and trafficking in weapons and goods. After the collapse of the pyramid schemes and the communist rebellion they incited, the Albanian state has turned into a field where everyone makes their own law. Criminal gangs tied to the new power that emerged from the 29 June elections have become masters of the roads and cities, while the police either remain passive or openly cooperate with them.
Flamur Hoxha, chairman of the PDGJ[?] branch in Elbasan, was executed last night in an assassination attempt. His killing has shocked public opinion and has shown that circles close to the government use violence to silence opposing voices. PS militants and local gangs operate armed in the city.
Reliable information shows that people wanted for serious crimes have been given travel documents and warnings to leave the country before the police intervene. This has raised serious suspicions of direct links between state structures and the criminal underworld.
In Velipojë, according to our sources, a large tobacco-smuggling operation is under way, involving people linked to government officials. The northern coast is being used as an illegal haven for goods entering and leaving without customs control.
In Tirana, meanwhile, the police have fired without warning at citizens, causing deaths and injuries. The climate of insecurity is spreading across the country.
Albania is sinking into chaos, while the new government either has no will or no ability to restore order.
