At the PD headquarters, Pollo also accompanied Van der Linden to a meeting with several representatives of independent institutions and Council of Europe bodies. The meeting was attended by the President of the Constitutional Court, Fehmi Abdiu, the head of SHIK, Arben Rakipi, the ombudsman and other institutional representatives. In another meeting, Van der Linden also held a conversation with the chairman of the parliamentary committee on laws. The latter, according to a PD statement, presented him with the opposition’s concerns about political interference in the judiciary and the majority’s efforts to control independent institutions.
Later in the day, Van der Linden also met with President Rexhep Meidani, with Speaker of Parliament Skënder Gjinushi, as well as with Prime Minister Fatos Nano. At the end of the meeting with the latter, Van der Linden told reporters that Albania must take careful steps forward in the democratic process and that the concerns raised by the opposition would be the subject of continuous monitoring by the Council of Europe.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nano also commented on the meeting, declaring that the conversation with Van der Linden had been open and constructive. He added that the Albanian government is determined to cooperate with European institutions and respect democratic standards. However, his statement that “I didn’t bring money” has been interpreted as a confirmation of the failure of his European tour to secure immediate financial aid.
In other political developments of the day, the chairman of the PD parliamentary group, Genc Pollo, held meetings concerning the High Council of Justice and the issues linked to interference in the justice system. It was also announced that Pjetër Arbnori has been discharged from hospital.
