Major international attention to the political crime against Azem Hajdari’s life Yesterday Albania was swept by strong protests in many cities, in response to the political crime against the life of MP Azem Hajdari, a [pure] act by the regime of violence and gangs. Tirana, Shkodra, Durrës, Kavaja, Fieri, Korça, Kurbini, Puka, Kukësi and other cities demanded the resignations of Nano, Gjinushi, Dokle, Klosi and Liçi, as officials directly implicated in the criminal act against the opposition. Tens of thousands of protesters united their voices against the installation of dictatorship in Albania by the Nano-Meidani clique and by criminal gangs which, after setting Albania ablaze during the rebellion, have now attacked the freedoms and rights of all Albanians. Yesterday, “Union for Democracy” set out the political demands of the opposition, which is facing a situation of violence and terror that goes as far as its physical elimination by the power of crime and Kalashnikovs. Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha said yesterday that the opposition’s peaceful protests would continue until its political demands were met, while making clear that it was not calling for early elections. Berisha told reporters yesterday that, among other things, the Socialist Party had promised Albanians the return of ... money, and the opposition would allow it the opportunity to fulfil that promise. The opposition’s protests against political crime are growing because of the regime’s irresponsible reactions, which turn the parliamentary chamber into a slaughterhouse. The violent rulers tried to give an ordinary, customary-law colouring to a premeditated political murder aimed at eliminating two of the opposition’s principal leaders. Fatos Nano, Skënder Gjinushi, Namik Dokle, Fatos Klosi, Haki Luçi and Frok Çupi can never wash away Azem Hajdari’s blood, just as they will never escape judgment for the cities that were burned and the people who were killed through the efforts and organisation of their communist rebellion. The evidence and traces of responsibility for the crime now clearly lead, for all Albanians, to the highest levels of the state. The government press and propagandists cannot hide behind customary law either “Doke’s order,” Majko’s delay in sending the Serbs, or the attempt to distort the murder order in Frok Çupi’s office. All the more so when customary law itself says that men cannot be killed in an assembly, armed like the political criminal Mazreku. The regime is trying to shut down the opposition; it responded to the protests with Pashk Tufa’s broadside and the threat that torture would be used against the “paid rats,” or with the farce of the Socialist Party Steering Committee meeting, where Majko pretended to call for a resignation, only for Nano and the others to oppose it. And after this sordid criminal attack on Azem Hajdari, masked men bloodied the parliament; Fatos Klosi’s State Security service [text unclear] disguised the principal collaborator of the newspaper “Bulevard,” Bejdo Malo. The Journalists’ Association appeals over the brutal beating of Bejdo Malo The criminal act against the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Bulevard,” Bejdo Malo, was also denounced yesterday by the Journalists’ Association of Albania in a public statement. The statement emphasizes that “masked bandits have used violence against the editor-in-chief of the newspaper ‘Bulevard,’ Bejdo Malo, who was brutally beaten at midnight on Thursday and, as a result of his injuries, is in serious condition.” The attack on Mr. Malo is an attack on freedom of speech and democracy as a whole. It comes after the latest still-mysterious killing of the journalist from “Gazeta Shqiptare,” Ali Ukaj, and the shooting and wounding of the journalist from “Rilindja Demokratike,” Muje Bupçapaj. The Journalists’ Association of Albania appeals to all Albanian and international public opinion to protect the lives of Albanian journalists, who feel increasingly physically at risk every day. The Journalists’ Association calls on the President of the Republic and the other institutions of the Albanian state to help put an end to violence against journalists and to take measures at least to safeguard their physical safety.

The killer Mazreku seeks refuge at ATSH The Journalists’ Association of Albania calls on the Director of the official news agency to resign immediately, because of what the Association describes as serious compromise in connection with a political crime. In a press statement, the Journalists’ Association of Albania considers it highly compromising for the Albanian Telegraphic Agency that the perpetrator of a political murder should find refuge in the office of the Director of the state news agency. Among other things, a press release states that “the prosecutor’s office must investigate the connection between the Director of the state News Agency and the killer,” and especially “the role the Agency’s Director may have taken upon himself in possibly hiding the killer.” The Journalists’ Association considers it a serious insult to an official press institution that its head should be regarded as a refuge in a criminal case, and calls for his immediate resignation. On the other hand, the Journalists’ Association also denounces the distortion of the news by an agency, which adds to the suspicions surrounding Thursday’s tragic events. Immediately after shooting Hajdari dead, deputy Mazreku was found just a few minutes later in the anteroom of the Director of the official news agency, with coffee in his slipper. The police booked him about 20 minutes after the murder, while, according to witnesses, they did not disarm him when taking him into custody.
