Local government shuts the gates
The communes and municipalities of all Albania go on strike: “Nanocracy must stop the rampage”
Lush Prçpali is unlocked from Puka. The government and state media invent strikebreakers. Parliament, the escalation of forms of protest
Yesterday, the local government strike spread throughout Albania. All communes and municipalities, with the exception of two or three of them, stopped working yesterday. This protest had been announced and was related to discrimination in the distribution of local government funds, to the dismissal of more than 4,500 local administration officials elected by the people, and to the failure to respect and the complete usurpation of local government. This protest is considered the first in a series of other actions through which local government in the country opposes the Nano government.
However, the government and its spokesperson are manipulating matters and, as is their well-known habit, are blaming local government for blocking reform. In reality, this reform, which was approved by a modest number of votes, is not reforming anything, but replacing it with dangerous centralization. These ideas and arguments also became clear in the protests organized by representatives of local government.
At the heart of the local authorities’ stance is the defense of their autonomy. Aggression and inappropriate interference by the central administration against local structures have become everyday occurrences. Under such conditions, yesterday’s protest is only the beginning of a broader political and institutional clash.

Disappointment, despair, isolation, betrayal in the first 100 days of rule by the former communists
The darkest days
for Albanians
The Democratic Party presented yesterday to public opinion a document titled “100 days of Nano’s government.” It is based on all the negative phenomena that have occurred in Albania during these last months, namely the failure of the government’s fiscal policy, the lack of security for life and property, the increased presence of former Sigurimi members in the administration and police, the government’s ties to trafficking, the lack of civil freedoms, etc. Such a document was presented by the spokesperson of the Democratic Party, Ethem Ruka, at a press conference. He emphasized that “the Socialist election campaign was full of promises and propaganda, while their first 100 days in government have produced nothing but disappointment and insecurity.”
