Europe warns Nano
Aid for Albania should be made conditional on respect for the opposition’s freedoms. Fight the Kretën coup: “It was a lapse”
Strong protests in “Skënderbej” Square
The government that has done no good for Albanians
The Albanian prime minister, Fatos Nano, appeared on Italian television on Saturday evening, promising, and telling the social-majority members of his party, that “the majority is determined to act responsibly, on the basis of the laws and the rules of force, to avoid chaos in Albania,” and added that “the majority has not exaggerated. The social-majority’s majority would harmonize state reform with international standards…”
Because of the grave situation and this pressure, the Western allies of the Albanian government were seriously mobilized. The American coordinator for the crisis in Albania and former U.S. envoy to the Balkans, Robert Frowick, said in an interview with RAI 3 that “the crisis is lasting and there will be serious consequences if the government does not respect political freedoms and does not avoid the use of force against the opposition.”
Frowick further said that “it would be a mistake for the Albanian authorities to use the police to crush the protests.”
The EU office also reacted on the same issue, stressing that aid for Albania should be linked to progress in respecting democratic standards.
Hundreds of citizens took part in the opposition rally in Tirana, protesting against the Nano government and demanding free elections.

After Nano took the stage, government officials joined in the absurd monologue of the head of government. This clearly shows that the Socialist government has not only failed to reflect on the situation that has arisen, but continues to maintain the same vulgar and dangerous stance toward its opponents. A large part of public opinion, as well as Western partners, have clearly understood that the prime minister is not capable of governing democratically and seeks to retain power through repressive means.
The first signs of this degradation have clearly appeared in the statements of representatives of the European Union and the American administration. Instead of supporting a government that violates the opposition, they are asking Tirana to guarantee political freedoms and not to intervene with police against the protests.
In “Skënderbej” Square, where hundreds of protesters gathered, the call for Nano’s removal and for the return of democratic order was clearly heard.

The concern of disunity within the world of major newspapers
Newspaper closures threatened
If the government continues to ignore the urgent demands of the press, the main newspapers may go on a general strike, which could lead to the suspension of daily publication because of the major difficulties of security, distribution and the severe financial situation facing the Albanian press.
The first and most fundamental demand addressed to the government is the implementation of the promises publicly made by Prime Minister Nano to abolish VAT on newsprint and support the distribution network. The lack of these measures has pushed many editorial offices to work on the edge of survival.
In the joint statement of the publishers, it is emphasized that without an immediate response, not only the newspapers but the entire free information system in the country risks paralysis.

Publishers and managers of the main Albanian newspapers warn that the situation has become unsustainable. According to them, newspapers face serious obstacles in circulation every day, insecurity on the ground, a shortage of paper and a significant drop in income.
In the joint statement of the publishers, it is noted that part of the problems are directly linked to the failure to deliver on the government’s promises to ease the tax burden on the press and to create the minimum conditions for the normal functioning of the distribution market.

Otherwise, it is warned that if urgent measures are not taken, many of the main newspapers will be forced to reduce circulation or even temporarily stop publishing.
