Gjinushi: “We will abolish the Court”
The Constitutional Court overturns the decision of the majority deputies. Parliament, the president and the government to reconcile. The country sinks into a deep institutional crisis
Ngjela calls for consensus to get out of the crisis. “Let the normal rotation of the Constitutional Court take place.” The majority decides to use its superiority at all times.
The government’s monopoly guarantees continue, and the law’s area of operation remains unbearable even after five months of protection by the mechanisms of the rule of law. The Constitutional Court’s decision on harmonizing the procedure for electing members with the three members of the Constitutional Court and the court of first instance, while requiring the majority to await the normal rotation of its judges, has opened a strong institutional conflict between Parliament, the President and the government. Instead of the majority accepting the path of constitutionality, the Speaker of Parliament, Skënder Gjinushi, declared that he would “abolish” the Constitutional Court. Meanwhile, Spartak Ngjela called for consensus and respect for the normal rotation of this court.

The chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, held a series of meetings yesterday. First he met with the head of the Albanian Mission in the United States, Marisa Lino, and with the U.S. Assistant Deputy Secretary of State, Ailin Molloi. Then, until midday, together with the deputy chairman of the Democratic Party, Genc Pollo, and the member of the Democratic leadership, Ylli Demi, he held a conversation with the American delegation. Afterwards Berisha met with the head of the Western European observer mission, Terry Treu, as well as with the leaders of the association of former political prisoners, representatives of the former property owners, and representatives of the Association of the Politically Persecuted. According to Democratic sources, during the meeting with the American officials they discussed the political situation in Albania. It was emphasized that the country is going through a serious political and institutional crisis, which is deepening because of the failure to respect the Constitution, the laws and the independent institutions. It was also underlined that there is no rule of law in Albania and that the political climate is tense. On page 5
