The “Albanian government” index on the Kosovo issue declined further at the sub-meeting of Balkan foreign ministers held in Istanbul. The godfather of the Albanian government, Pangallos, this time left Milo out in the cold, putting him in the role of a pupil whose ear the Greek can twist whenever he feels like it, until even the roots crack. The Greek neighbour is no more able to speak about the children, women and elderly of Kosovo than it is about the exchanges without people, plants, colour or taste in the Aegean, while only a short time ago it vetoed Turkey’s admission to the EU because of the Cyprus problem—which, by Pangallos’s logic on Kosovo, is a problem for the Cypriots and not at all for Greece. Pangallos also mocks Kosovo and makes a mockery of Albania. He also does Kreta, pulling the chair out from under Prime Minister Fatos Nano, and vetoes, pulling the rug out from under Foreign Minister Paskal Milo. The failure at the meeting of Balkan foreign ministers follows that of Dayton in Zë, held in Jalë, whose concluding declaration did not mention the Kosovo problem at all. Something different happened in Croatia, where a meeting of Central European countries was held; they also reacted strongly through a declaration on the genocide in Kosovo. This appears to have happened because there was no Albanian government delegation there. The decline of the “Tirana” factor was not prevented either by visits from American mediators, nor by meetings between prominent European diplomats at Rinas Airport. All these pitiful meetings were a ready-made step towards building up the factor of official Tirana, to the point of taking its arguments or alternatives into consideration. This was the limit to which the Albanian factor could fall in the case of Kosovo, but certainly not to the point where even the Albanian government’s friends publicly mock our ministers. It remains to reconsider Milo’s friendship with Pangallos, or Nano’s with Xoaxopolos. If this is merely a friendship of tenders, then they should declare it as such and take only the benefits accruing to the country when the tenders are won only by Greek companies. Otherwise, it remains to be said that Kosovo is viewed from Athens by both Milo and Pangallos. Our Albanian minister has long been preparing Albanian public opinion for his diplomatic failure, having come up against the major Kosovo issue. More than once he has complained in the Albanian Parliament that the international community is taking no steps towards a solution, even though just yesterday and the day before, almost all the leaders of the great Western powers spoke out about the massacres. Only the friends found in Kreta and the Greek minister Pangallos remain. It seems our foreign minister considers only those who politically helped him become Foreign Minister to be influential. Official Tirana has trained him to be irresponsible. It has been irresponsible in every instance concerning Kosovo. If you betray all the Albanian prime minister’s statements on Kosovo, that alone is enough to understand how easily the Greek chief diplomat could, with a stroke of the pen, leave out all the massacres in Kosovo and leave the Serbian army and police standing before the Balkan ministers. The Balkan conference of chief diplomats, which ended without any reflection on the massacres in Kosovo, once again shows how far behind the rest of the world Balkan mentalities are. It shows that friendship among Balkan countries is also a stream made of paper and, just like everything that remains suspended thanks to its dimensions, the Balkans need a third dimension: the pan-Albanian factor. More than 100 tons of goods, mainly flour, rice, sugar, oil, mattresses, blankets, clothing, etc., have arrived in Tropojë to help our Kosovar brothers. All this aid has been collected by ordinary people, following the appeal made by Radio “Kontakti” to help our Kosovar brothers. With its broadcasts, Radio “Kontakti” has made it possible for thousands of people to flock to it and offer their valuable assistance. They are of all ages—men, women, children, elderly people, newly married couples—who have opened their doors and hearts to their brothers of the same blood. The broadcasts of “Kontakti” have brought Albanians closer together than ever before. Their aid is very modest, but Albanian generosity and hospitality are the most precious qualities that Albanians are once again displaying during the most difficult days for our nation. The director of Radio “Kontakti”, Alfons Zeneli, deeply moved but enthusiastic, speaks about Albanians’ patriotic feelings as he watches the stream of people every day in the narrow corridor of “Kontakti”, bringing aid for their Kosovar brothers. “People have come not only from Tirana, but from all the districts, to help our brothers from Kosovo in any way they can, after they came here to escape Serbian terror,” the director of Radio “Kontakti” tells us. “As of yesterday, we had sent more than 100 tons of goods to Tropojë, while today we sent the second consignment: another six trucks with food and various medicines. There will also be another consignment; we are ready to send medicines according to the requests we receive from Tropojë. Now we will begin distributing aid to host families as well. We have received numerous phone calls from families in Tirana and other districts who have opened their doors and hearts to welcome families coming from Kosovo. So far, hundreds of Kosovar families have been accommodated in Tirana, and we are awaiting more families,” concludes the director of Radio “Kontakti”, Alfons Zeneli. Everyone has contributed for their Kosovar brothers, from children to the elderly. Fifth-grade pupils at the eight-year school “Eqerem Çabej” collected a considerable sum of money and brought it in for their Kosovar brothers. Meanwhile, the Association of the Blind brought several packages of aid that it had received from a sister association in Switzerland. Students have also provided a special consignment; they come to this radio station every day to ask about the situation in Tropojë. The “Kontakti” Club has by now sent many times more aid than the government of Fatos Nano, which still talks about “refugees” and “Kosovars”. In Tropojë, government aid is not only scarce, but Nano and the others are seeking to add even more to the pain and tears of the brothers expelled from Kosovo by preventing them from settling in other parts of Albania, where people are waiting to welcome them with open arms.
