The phenomenon of abstention

By Idrol LAÇO The voting figures in the district of Shpat, counted by the faithful and the lost confidence in the vote, also show a considerable distancing of the electorate from trust in politics. The data drawn from the election results in this area, which has traditionally been right-wing, show that half of the electorate refused to vote, clearly separating the former support for the right. The figures speak of 47,562 voters in total, but only 23,597 voters took part at the polling stations, which means a turnout of 49.62 percent. According to CEC data, only 12,706 voters voted for right-wing candidates, or 26.7 percent of the total number of voters. On the other hand, left-wing candidates received 10,694 votes, or about 22.5 percent. The difference between them was small, but what stands out is the high level of abstention. If there had been normal participation by the right-wing electorate, the election result in these areas could have been completely different. But the figures show a phenomenon that cannot be ignored: voters are moving away from politics, from the parties, and from the belief that their vote brings change. ON PAGE 3
