Nano against Rugova, the KLA and Kosovo’s independence

By Arshi Pipa[t]ol The Americans have made it clear to President Rugova and Prime Minister Bukoshi that they can no longer act in the name of the government of Kosovo, since that government no longer has the support of the people. It lost this support in Albania, during the period when the Albanian government was under the presidency of Sali Berisha. At that time the president of Albania was the only politician who supported Rugova in words. The President of Albania, Sali Berisha, did this not because he liked Rugova, but because of his hatred toward Nano, whom he then kept in prison as a political opponent. But now? Hostility toward Nano can no longer be a reason for supporting Rugova. Nano may be called anti-Kosovar, but today he is the prime minister of Albania and no one can ignore him. It is clear that a new policy toward Kosovo is being implemented, in which the KLA must take the leading role. Kosovo is gaining independence through war, through the bravery of its fighters, not through speeches and petitions. The confidence of Kosovo Albanians in the KLA has grown especially after its connection with the government in Tirana. Meanwhile, those who oppose the KLA and Kosovo’s independence are becoming increasingly isolated. Nano’s latest stance against Rugova and Kosovo’s independence should also be understood in this framework. [The text continues in the inner columns, partially illegible:] Nano has the Albanian of the century before his eyes. What matters to him is that Albanian politics should not remain hostage to a strategy with no results. If Rugova and his circle continue to oppose the military force of the KLA, they will ultimately lose any representative role. [Faint and difficult-to-read passage at the end of the column.] ON PAGE 7
