Democrats must take on the responsibilities that belong to them
Albanian democrats must take on the responsibilities that belong to them and carry out the duties dictated by the times. Today more than ever it is time for the great political responsibility of the opposition and of the Democratic Party to rise to the level of the demands posed by the difficult moment the country is going through.
For more than seven months, the opposition has been under constant pressure from government propaganda, which has inevitably treated it as a force that obstructs the restoration of the state and public order, a force that encourages the risks of destabilizing the country and destroying the weakened economy. This propaganda has been not only merciless toward the opposition and the Democratic Party, but also unfair. It has distorted everything the opposition has done in favor of democratizing the country and overthrowing the anti-democratic regime. It has hidden the bitter truth of what has actually happened in the country since 2 March 1998.
There is no doubt that Albanians have understood and are clear about who is responsible for the chaos that engulfed the country after 2 March, for the economic and institutional devastation that followed it, and for the government’s inability to restore normality. They know who has governed and is governing with arrogance and revenge, and who has tried to keep a democratic alternative alive.
The Democratic Party and the opposition cannot remain only in the role of denouncers. They must take on the moral and political burden that belongs to them in order to organize democratic resistance and offer a way out. The time calls for political maturity, determination, and sacrifice.
