By Astrit Patozi The state is being violated and condemned by the verdict imposed over the letter of a PD deputy addressed to the Albanian parliament with accusations about drug trafficking. Instead of being published and treated as a denunciation and investigated, the letter of the Democratic deputy is being turned into a matter of state proportions. Neither the media nor public opinion has the right to see it, publish it, or comment on it. Meanwhile, the chair of the parliamentary session in which this letter was read threatens publishers with legal consequences, and the Tirana Court, at the request of the prosecutor's office, orders the seizure of the newspaper “Koha Jonë”, which had published it. That parts of the independent press should be persecuted in the name of “state secret” because they dare to publish a deputy's letter has happened only in the era of Nano's rule. The title of the man who has become the trigger for all this uproar is well known. He is the same Fatos Nano, who a year ago publicly declared that there is no drug trafficking in Albania. Now, when opposition representatives bring concrete accusations, he demands silence, prohibition, and fear. The great concern is not only about what is said in the letter, but about the state reaction to it. Instead of the competent authorities investigating claims about trafficking routes and links, they are dealing with the press. That is why today the country seems closer to censorship than to transparency. And that is why the opposition speaks of a return to the practices of the old regime. If today the publication of a parliamentary letter is banned, tomorrow speech, thought, and public denunciation may be banned.
