. Last night Albanian journalists protested in front of the prime minister’s office against the violation of freedom of speech. They protested against the killing, wounding and terrorizing of opposition journalists, and the denial of all the conditions needed for them to practice their profession normally as informers of public opinion. Most of them bore wounds inflicted by the secret communist police on their bodies; they had been brutalized by them and faced court cases brought by smuggling officials who had murdered their political opponents. The only “sin” committed by these distinguished people of the Albanian press is that they have courageously exposed the communist mafia restored to power through violence and the mass killing of ideological opponents. No regime in the world has treated freedom of speech as barbarically as the regime of F. Nano and his associates. The politics Nano and his associates. The policy of Nano and the criminal factions he leads has aimed to silence the opposition. The imprisonment of free speech at RTSH, the surveillance of the anti-communist newspapers “RD,” “Albania,” “55,” etc., the shutting off of their telephones for a time, physical threats against their premises, tax increases, and, most recently, the drafting of a law restricting freedom of expression constitute the darkest picture of the press in Albania and throughout Europe. A century which, in its very first week, killed journalist A. Uka, wounded other journalists, brutalized journalists B. Myftari, B. Malo and R. Polisi, and terrorized with weapons the opposition newspaper editors L. Dervishi, A. Patozi and F. Balliu, is a state that bars its people from the most terrifying darkness. In fact, no one who knows even a little about dictatorships and dictators expects them to follow the rules of political competition, recognize a free press as a condition of pluralism, or respect freedom of expression as a universal human right. This is outside their criminal, communist morality. Nevertheless, we are determined to defend freedom of speech and freedom of expression as the very foundation of democracy, as the test of whether it functions. By protesting in front of the office of the [unclear] list of all the killings in Albania after 29 June, Albanian journalists once again showed domestic and international public opinion who the criminal is, and also that people of the press in Albania are not afraid or intimidated. F. Nano, murderer of journalists, remember that by shooting them you have also tried to kill their ideas of freedom and democracy, which they seek to bring to the people by every means as soon as possible. But this is only the end of a dictator’s [unclear]. He and the clique in power could not stop Albanian journalists from informing the public about violations of human rights in this country, about the crimes, thefts, smuggling and anti-national policies pursued by it and by F. Nano. Today, as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights also states, everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression and the right not to be disturbed because of their opinions, as well as the right to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. The European Convention on Human Rights, which Albania has also signed, clearly guarantees the protection of freedom of the press, but so far this regime has recognized neither the country’s constitutional law nor international practice. The latest restriction being prepared for the press in the name of protecting state secrets risks imprisonment and long sentences for all journalists who undertake to publish the truth. In international practice, any restriction on the press can be regarded as having a legitimate aim only when it advances democracy and is based on international treaties protecting freedom of expression, and is necessary for national security. The latest government act is also necessary for national security. Therefore, it does not meet any of these conditions. That is why Albanian journalists are determined to defend freedom of expression to the very end. Last night around 70 journalists from the right-wing opposition protested with slogans against the violation of the free press for about 20 minutes in front of the entrance to Prime Minister Nano’s office, and five minutes before the Presidential session began. Unfortunately, all our colleagues from the left-wing and pro-government press were absent, thus becoming silent defenders of state crime and the killers of their right-wing colleagues.
