U.S. Embassy in Tirana is closed

Nano and Milošević force the Americans to abandon Albania. The State Department tells the American ambassadors to leave the “land of eagles” ON PAGE 3 The neo-communists bring back 1946, when the missionaries and the British were expelled from Albania. The Albanians, at least since last year’s massacre Yesterday’s rains flooded the new American embassy center yesterday. It seems that Prime Minister Majko and the mayor of Tirana, much talked about for the sewer and road deals, began taking the first measures so that one of the most distinctive buildings in Albania since the time of King Zog would not also be flooded. In helping them yesterday, without sparing themselves, were even Sali Shehu himself, with the deputy interior minister, while Mr. SHIK successfully carried out the embassy’s duty at the Tirana headquarters and put an end to the flooding. Meanwhile, Mr. Ambassador Limpreht sorted out the situation and in the evening paid his first official visit to the children of the victims at the trauma hospital. The entire high state apparatus of Tirana was engaged to help this humanitarian act, which honors our country and its capital. Meanwhile, from what has been made public, it appears that the presence of the American mission in Tirana is being seriously called into question and the decision to withdraw the staff is linked to the security situation in the country. Berisha: Receive the envoy of the French government on the Kosovo crisis, Ambassador Jacques Huntzinger The chairman of the PD, Sali Berisha, expressed to Ambassador Huntzinger his deep concern regarding the dramatic and tragic situation in Kosovo, caused by the barbaric military aggression and ethnic cleansing of the Serb regime in Belgrade. Berisha assessed that this dramatic and unacceptable development is posing a serious threat not only to peace and security in the region, but also to the stability of democracy and the Euro-Atlantic future of Albania and the Albanians. The chairman of the PD stressed that the UÇK, as the force leading the armed resistance against Milošević’s genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Albanians in Kosovo, is an important and irreplaceable political factor in resolving the Kosovo crisis, although he condemned as unacceptable the kidnapping of Serb civilians by the Kosovo Liberation Army. Chairman Berisha raised the need for the French government to engage with all its political and diplomatic potential to immediately stop Milošević’s genocide against the defenseless Albanians of Kosovo. Chairman Berisha requested that France, its government, and all international bodies exert strong pressure on Belgrade so that a peaceful solution to the crisis can be reached without delay, a solution which must include Kosovo’s independence as the only path to a lasting peace in the region. In this context, Ambassador Huntzinger informed Chairman Berisha that he was making this visit as part of a mission commissioned by the French government to gather the views and opinions of Albanian authorities and political parties on the situation in Kosovo. Ambassador Huntzinger assured Chairman Berisha of the determination of the French government and personally of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Hubert Védrine to make every effort by the French government and the international community so that the immediate cessation of violence and a political solution for Kosovo can be achieved. In a spirit of understanding with this view, the French ambassador and the chairman of the Democratic Party were of the opinion that the anti-Albanian government in Tirana should urgently be eliminated and replaced with a technical government that would organize free and fair elections, as the most rational solution to be taken at this critical moment for Albania. Chairman Berisha told the French ambassador that the French government cannot have independent positions and must never allow itself to fall prey to the manipulations of the Nano government, so as not to become an instrument against a country and a nation. At the end of the meeting Chairman Berisha gifted the French ambassador his book on Kosovo, published in Paris under the title “Kosova, le volcan balkanique”, as well as the photo album “Kështu e pashë Kosovën”, also published in the French capital. The French ambassador promised that he would read it carefully and convey the message of the Albanian people to a great friend of Albania and the Albanian nation, President Jacques Chirac. A few days earlier, another ambassador of a major European country, Joakim Lancaster, also stood in support of the UÇK and Rugova, declaring that in the bloody 6-hour violence in Kosovo, Milošević was using methods belonging to the Middle Ages.
