Backwardness and the lack of security, poverty and corruption, are relentlessly pursuing them everywhere. The government, which came to power with grand promises, is failing to build trust either at home or abroad. Albanians are experiencing every day the anxiety of insecurity and terror. In Tirana, the checks in foreigners’ homes, the extraordinary security measures, the many escorts for senior officials, give the image of a frightened country. The cancellation of Ambassador Hill’s visit reinforces this feeling. Ordinary citizens feel unprotected, while government officials move around with multiple layers of protection. This is a bad hour for Albanians, a time when friends are leaving, while official propaganda tries to hide the reality. Albania needs order, trust, and a state that protects the citizen, not only the official.
