Tirana: Ready to drive out the blocmen

Democrats throughout Albania determined to stand up to the clique’s terror. Heated developments in Tirana, Shkodër and Elbasan NANO AND THE SIDA OF TERROR The decomposition of all of Albania is confirming that the regime of Fatos Nano has rotted to the core. Wherever his power reaches, it produces only violence, trafficking, corruption and depopulation. The terror of his clique has spread through every link of the state, turning institutions into tools of repression against citizens. In Tirana, Democrats have made it clear that they will not accept the usurpation of power and the militarization of political life. Shkodër and Elbasan are also reported to be inflamed by civic reaction and by the organization of democratic structures for political confrontation. This mobilization comes in a grim political climate, where the opposition accuses the government of repression, provocations and attempts to frighten the people. Throughout the country there is talk of the need for a mass response against this situation. (Article continues on page 2[?]) Çerrik June 1997

Berisha on the Italian ambassador in Tirana, on the OSCE report on the situation in the country Meeting of the PD chairman, Berisha, with Ambassador Franz Parak On Wednesday, the chairman of the PD, Sali Berisha, asked the Italian ambassador in Tirana, Dr. Mario [...?], that the Italian government do everything possible to save the country from the political catastrophe into which it has been plunged by the criminal rule of Prime Minister Fatos Nano, who is imposing a paramilitary regime on the country. The meeting took place at the headquarters of the Democratic Party with the participation of Ambassador Franz Parak, after which a press statement was issued. Berisha stressed that the OSCE report and recent developments prove that political arrests are being carried out in Albania and that the opposition is facing unacceptable pressure. Nano and the lost challenge with the opposition

BY SELIM FATOZI Democrats all in unison. All Albanians on the side of the opposition. Tirana, Shkodër and Elbasan, cities of rebellion against the clique and the political enemy. Although in recent days the political climate in the country seems harsh because of the moves and words thrown around in the political environment by various figures from the left-wing camp, who under the pretext that they belong to the institutional wing, have engaged in the political elimination of the opposition, we cannot fail to note at the same time the failure of the challenge that was made to it. These stances have been taken by the leaders of the governing coalition themselves and by spokespeople for institutional segments who, despite having a harsh and threatening discourse toward the opposition, are not managing to break its resistance. On the contrary, the opposition is gaining ground and consolidating its presence in public opinion. The actions, statements and pressures of these days have brought only greater strain in political relations, but not the submission of the opposition. In this sense, the challenge thrown at it has proved lost for the government. This is clearly seen in Tirana, Shkodër and Elbasan, where the reaction of citizens and the mobilization of opposition forces shows that the climate of political rebellion is strengthening. The opposition is seen as the only alternative against the capture of the state and the degradation of governance. Instead of being isolated, it has become more present, more vocal and more supported. That is why Fatos Nano’s challenge to the opposition is not producing the desired result.
