The madness of power in retreat

BY SHËN PATROZI After three days, the meanings of the latest afternoon developments on the country's political scene and the latest developments taken as a whole make it increasingly clear that the electoral mandate that has passed into the hands of the Socialist Party is now based on a broad procession. To corruption and paralysis, without economic and financial crisis, the government of Fatos Nano will add the evil of the revival of political persecution with all the means of institutional repression. In a country where people have been impoverished by an inflation unworthy of the most incapable and short-lived government in the history of pluralism, “press control of opinion” and “independent criticism” remain a message and a propaganda instrument of governance that stands against every norm of civilization. The use of the state apparatus to arbitrarily suspend the newspaper “Demokracia” and to use police force against journalist Ilir Zhilla and photojournalist Alfons Zeneli are two indicators not merely technical of the path the current majority is leading the country down. They are signs that, beyond the rhetoric with which it is trying to beautify its true face before Albanians, power can no longer hide its fear of defeat and its revenge against political opponents. It is clear that the climate created over the last few weeks cannot be explained only by the panic of a government unable to face the economic and social crisis. There is something more: the desire to silence the opposition, to frighten the media, and to strike at every voice that speaks out against it. What is happening to the newspaper “Demokracia” and to its journalists is not just an ordinary administrative or police incident. It is a clear signal to all those who dare to think differently, a warning that freedom of speech and the press will be the next victim of a power that is rapidly sliding toward authoritarianism. Under these conditions, the opposition and public opinion cannot remain indifferent. Silence would mean accepting this situation and opening the way to even greater abuses tomorrow. Today’s protests in Tirana, Durrës, Kavaja, Elbasan and Shijak are not only a response to a discredited government, but also an effort to stop the degradation of political life and the return of methods from the past. Albanian democracy, fragile and defenseless, cannot survive if the state is used as a party tool and the police as an instrument of pressure against citizens. Therefore, what is happening must be seen as an alarm bell. Anyone who still has illusions that the Socialist majority will be satisfied with empty rhetoric should carefully observe the developments of recent days. Instead of governance and reforms, citizens are being offered arbitrariness, fear and violence masked by big words. This is the essence of the madness of power in retreat: the more ground it loses, the harsher it becomes toward its opponents.

Anatomy of the so-called coup d'état

Slander, fabrication and slander? Was it from 3 murdered by 'la Repubblica' and 'Il Giornale' ? Slander, fabrication and slander? Was it from 3 murdered by “la Repubblica” and “Il Giornale”? Last Friday, “Il Giornale”, one of the best-known Italian newspapers, published an article titled “Albania in the hands of the gangs,” while “La Repubblica” described the situation in the country as a new explosion of chaos. In its response, the press close to the Albanian government tried to call these articles slander and fabrications, but the fact that the Italian media gave such great attention to the crisis in Albania shows that the concern is real. The article raises questions about the so-called “coup d'état” and tries to reconstruct the events according to official and unofficial versions. From this point of view, the manipulation of information and the attempt to shift attention away from the real problems of the country become part of a political strategy. ON PAGE 6
