Ten days after the event, the murder of the Democratic MP Azem Hajdari has been the headline of the international press. In its reports, the international media have strongly denounced the involvement of the Albanian government in the crime and the mafia-style assassination attempt against Azem Hajdari. The well-known American newspaper “The New York Times” wrote yesterday: “For at least 10 days, Albania has been shaken by the killing of Azem Hajdari, who was a senior opposition leader and an anti-communist student who helped overthrow the dictatorship 8 years ago. On the day of his funeral, thousands of protesters attacked and occupied the office of the prime minister, Fatos Nano.” The well-known newspaper went on to write: “Besides now being a former prime minister, Nano continues to be the most powerful man in Albania and chairman of the Socialist Party. He feels under threat because he cannot escape responsibility for the government’s affairs and may consequently have been implicated in Hajdari’s murder.” The New York Times wrote that “Albanian politics is deeply shaken and the country risks a new destabilisation.”

A large protest rally will be held tomorrow from 17:00 by the opposition in Tirana’s Skanderbeg Square.
The Democratic Party has made it clear that its protest and revolt will be peaceful and civilised. In this context, the leaders of the PD and of the opposition as a whole are calling on the citizens of Tirana, and of all Albania, to gather in Skanderbeg Square in order to throw the government of gangs into panic. All local structures of the PD and its allies have taken every measure for the organisation and smooth running of this major protest. The opposition spirit is growing day by day and yesterday’s protest is the clearest sign of the Albanian people’s revolt against the communist regime of Fatos Nano. The Association of Politically Persecuted Persons and a number of other civil society organisations have declared their support for the opposition protests and for its demand that the government leave. In all branches of the party across the country, meetings and gatherings are being held for the widest possible participation in today’s protest.

That is why today, in every office, in every city, in every home, people are talking about justice and about saving the country from this evil.

The PD calls on government officials to leave with dignity and to step down from positions where their conscience is killing them. Berisha underscores continuity firmly in this crisis. Berisha stresses that this is not about replacements with leftovers, but about a fundamental change.

Every day that passes since the killing of Azem Hajdari, we see monstrous new attempts to manipulate the event. All the speculations made in the government-friendly press or even in the announcements of criminal justice, either must lead to an accurate identification of the perpetrators, or must be dismissed as slander. But until today the government has favoured the concealment of traces, the diversion of the investigation and the distortion of public opinion. In this way, the public knows how much this chairman, Azem Hajdari, means and what value comes from him.
