Manipulations, a risk of civil war

By Edi PALOKA The trap set, together with government propaganda in the public media, which has systematically denied the right to free information for all other political sensitivities, is essentially an attempt to impose a predetermined result. Under these conditions, today's referendum risks turning not into an instrument of democratic expression, but into a new source of civil clashes. Instead of creating an atmosphere of trust, the government has chosen the language of pressure, fear and manipulation. Therefore, any result produced in this atmosphere cannot be considered free, fair or acceptable to Albanian society. (Continues on page 3)

The champagne of press freedom

By Bardhyl LONDO In these last two months, official propaganda has taken the use of the public press, radio and television as tools of a one-sided campaign to an unprecedented peak. Under the name of information, citizens have been served only one version of reality: the one that serves power. In this climate, free speech itself has become a decorative element, while the critical voice has been drowned out or presented as an enemy. Therefore, it is a bitter irony to speak of a celebration of the press when its very freedom is under constant threat. (Continues on page 3)

Coldness before the referendum

By Arif PATOZI Voices from the units and from the offices had already disclosed, on the penultimate evening, the degree of indifference and mistrust among Albanians. If, with polls below 50 percent of the electorate, yesterday it already seemed at risk that the referendum for tomorrow's constitution of our country would fail — a constitution that is in essence and in name first and foremost that of a political minority in power — then the utopian dream of part of the Albanian people for a civilized Albania is quickly fading away. Since yesterday, election offices in all state and government institutions, the police service, public venues, as well as educational and health institutions in the regions, have openly called for people to vote, thus plainly exposing the use of the state to guarantee a result favorable to the left. But if some such measures, which play in favor of the government's election committees, are unavoidable in a country where the state is still a tool in the hands of temporary leaders, regardless of which side they are on, what is most alarming is the evident coldness of public opinion. Ordinary people today seem the least interested in an adventure that brings them no immediate hope, because above their heads they have their endangered Albania, without order and without a state, even more strongly than a constitution that comes under the shadow of a discredited government. Although there has been a disproportionate use of state resources and the administration, civic engagement in taking part in such a vote has never been weaker, since it is clear that this constitutional product does not represent a solution to their vital problems. Yesterday the cities were quiet, the streets almost empty, and interest in the polling stations minimal. This public coldness is the clearest sign of the crisis of trust in politics and in institutions. (Continues on page 3)
