Everyone to the protest square
12 December, eight years since the founding of the Democratic Party
Tomorrow, throughout Albania and wherever Albanians are living, various activities will be held to mark the 8th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic Party. In Tirana, at 11:00, representatives of the PDSH will honor the memory of Azem Hajdari at the Martyrs' Cemetery of the Nation, while at 13:30 tributes will be held at the headquarters of the PDSH. Afterwards, a protest rally will take place in “Skënderbej” Square.
Nothing on this day has been done to revive the “shëndrën”
The students win, Majko chose defeat
The students win,
Majko chose defeat
Eight years after the student movement, much in the mirror of Albanian universities has not changed. The political elite or pseudo-elite, the unions and civil society seem to have lost their mission. It is enough to remember that three days earlier, in the studios of our television channels, the students were treated as shallow, provincial, and manipulated by politics.
So when they suddenly came out into the streets, many people could not shake the fear that December '90 was repeating itself. But how could it be said that the students were being manipulated by politics when, from the very first moment, they identified themselves with two sharp and universal phenomena: freedom of speech and belonging to a European community.
And so, from the beginning until today, there has been an effort to isolate them or to divide them by conjuring up no few scenarios. This kind of absurdity and paranoia was noticeable as soon as the student movement became clear, when the U.S. ambassador was asked: what is Washington's position toward these protests? Almost on the same day, a pseudo-analyst on TVSH called it the government's right not to consider them cannon fodder. As for civil society, which one does not know how civil it really is, it did not see that the hope for a postmodern student movement was being extinguished and its tired egoism was being revived.
Therefore the students had decided not to become cannon fodder, but the voice of a community that defends itself with civic spirit and courage. For this reason, they spoke clearly and in the language of freedom. They demanded their rights, freedom of the media, a freer and more dignified university, and refused to accept that their protest could be used for narrow political aims.
It was enough to look at their faces to understand that this was not simply student dissatisfaction, but a profound moral and civic reaction to the cynicism of power. By not listening to them, the government chose defeat.
