Tirana with the hunger strikers

The era of hunger strikes or of dialogue without political prejudices By Bardhyl LONDO Never before has the time been so politically charged as in these days. All of Albania is deeply troubled, convinced that another unpleasant situation is unfolding in Tirana and, it seems, as has become customary, it is once again being driven mainly by the irresponsible positions of the government. What is happening with the students of the University of Vlora has its origin in the repeated appointment of certain prefects, who, although they come from the ranks of the army, are an open challenge to the constitution and the laws of the state. The government of the Socialist Party is trying to treat the demands of the students of Vlora as a power game and to view their movement as an outburst of anger from the Democratic Party, although the latter has formally denounced the military prefects as not only illegal but also highly dangerous for civil stability. Little by little, an unheard-of situation was created, which pushed the students to defend university autonomy, their lives and their future. Yesterday’s Tirana was completely shaken, waking early to the grim news of the poisoning and then the self-sacrifice of the students on hunger strike, which could bring nothing good to public opinion. Shocked like no one else, the citizens of Tirana gathered in front of the faculty where the hunger strike was taking place, convinced that first and foremost the students’ lives must be saved and that political tension has become unacceptable. If we have reached the point where no one believes anyone, then we are truly on the brink of catastrophe and immediate measures must be taken to restore civic dialogue. The Democratic Party and the entire opposition in the country have long called for this situation to be ended through early elections and through a political solution to the crisis. But the government continues to act with arrogance, unable to hear the voice of the citizens and the students. Faced with a fait accompli, with students risking their lives, the citizens of Tirana showed yesterday that they can no longer remain indifferent. Hundreds of citizens of Tirana joined the hunger strike, and this is the most telling sign that the crisis has entered a new stage. In this situation, the path to talks must urgently be opened and provocations by the secret services and the police must be abandoned. Students are not enemies. They are our children. The civic response to this event showed that Tirana only needs a spark to explode, but its citizens chose solidarity and not violence. This is the only hope of getting out of this situation. English translation: Tirana with the hunger strikers. The era of hunger strikes or of dialogue without political prejudices. Never before has the time been so politically burdened as these days. All Albanians are worried, convinced that another undesirable situation is developing in Tirana and, as it seems, as has become customary, it is mainly being encouraged by the irresponsible positions of the government. What is happening with the students of the University of Vlora has its origin in the repeated appointment of certain prefects who, although coming from the ranks of the army, are an open challenge to the constitution and the laws of the state. The government of the Socialist Party is trying to consider the students' demands as a power game and to see in their movement the anger of the Democratic Party, although the latter has regularly denounced that military prefects are not only unlawful but also very dangerous for civil stability. Yesterday's Tirana was entirely shaken after waking up with the grim news of the poisoning and then self-sacrifice of the students on hunger strike. Yesterday, thousands of citizens of Tirana found themselves in a hunger strike. “Students with us, the government is murderous” was a slogan that defined the spirit of solidarity with the students on hunger strike
