Shkodër remained under terror
The prefect: Përdoranca resigns. After dialogue, the prefecture is unblocked. Çeka insists on removing tension from the city. The relative calm was burdened by civic votes supported by political forces. The state waits to be informed by the people of Shkodër. Politicians are stopped. A major wave of arrests is expected.
Yesterday Shkodër was held tight and sealed off under extraordinary security measures. Important parts of it were under the control of numerous rapid-intervention police forces as well as army units. The city had the bitter taste of the events of the previous day, while the traces of unnecessary bloodshed made the scene even more dramatic. The situation appeared complicated by confirmations and counter-confirmations and by the clarity and lack of clarity it carried. Shortly after the arrival in the northern city of Prime Minister Fatos Nano, General Ahmet Prençi, Minister Luan Rama, Bashkim Fino and other senior officials, the situation began to calm down. Along with the prime minister, three helicopters carrying police and special forces also arrived later in Shkodër. Army and police forces took positions at important state facilities in Shkodër. During the day the city was not placed under normal circulation; on the contrary, all movement was under control and it was impossible to move beyond the zones marked out by police forces. Fatos Nano himself was yesterday in a meeting with deputies from the area, local government leaders and representatives of political forces and civil society, where he asked them to help calm the situation and avoid further clashes. Reports of incidents and arrests continued to circulate in the city, while the situation remained fragile. The photo on the page shows a group of boys in front of the prefecture of Shkodër.
