Yesterday the police carried out the long-awaited action. It decided to forcibly expel 16 violent men, criminals and foreign traffickers who had illegally occupied Hotel “Adriatik” and had not paid rent for 2 months. Police forces from Tirana, Durrës and Fier, reinforced by the special unit, took part in the operation. In the armed resistance put up by the occupiers, one policeman was injured. After the gunfire scene, the police withdrew to leave room for a more considered action. In the evening, Fatos Nano declared on television that there would be no civil war in Albania. During the debate, Prime Minister Nano and his links with the old structures were repeatedly mentioned. The article quotes Vranicki as expressing surprise at the way his words were distorted by the government press and by interpretations made in Tirana. He denied having supported Nano’s position and stressed that Albania needs independent institutions, not propaganda.
Regarding Shkodër, it is said that the government is treating the city as a zone of political punishment, while parliament has remained silent. At the same time, the absence of the Constitutional Court has been presented as a severe blow to the democratic order.
