Serbian occupiers massacred entire villages in Kosovo again yesterday. This time, with cannons, tanks, mortars and even rockets, dozens and dozens of Albanian homes were razed, while the toll of dead and wounded among the innocent residents is still unknown. The medieval logic of our Serbian neighbors is trying to create yet another brutal likeness in the Balkans, following those of Bosnia and Croatia. As the fourth day of Serbian barbarity against the defenseless Albanian people passes, Tirana is trying to overcome the bewilderment of the first day. The country’s political forces have managed to come together, with the exception of the governing coalition, and have signed a clear declaration against the Serbian offensive in Kosovo. The declaration is unequivocal and also sets out possible ways to resolve the problem, as well as the key points, consistently formulated under the same slogan: “one nation, one stance.” Yesterday, too, Democratic Party deputies took a strong step toward drawing the governing coalition into a common position shared by all Albanian political forces. The DP parliamentary group took part last night in an extraordinary session of Parliament concerning the worsening situation in Kosovo, and opposition leader Sali Berisha called for the other parties in government to join the opposition parties’ declaration. He said the points under discussion could be reviewed, but that it was extremely important for the position on this major issue to be unified. The thesis inspired by the DP, “one nation, one stance,” was also accepted by the Albanian left, which has undertaken to join a large number of rallies to be held throughout Albania. The main leaders of the political parties will also take part in a large rally in “Skënderbej” Square, politicians—but today at midday. The Kosovo issue and the clear danger of a conflict with serious consequences for the region demand increasing responsibility from Albanian politics. The change to the text of Parliament’s resolution on Kosovo is a precedent that exposes certain segments of Albanian governance, which may shirk their great responsibility toward the nation at its most difficult moments. There has also been slowness and haste in Albanian diplomacy in making certain decisions or planning certain requests addressed to the European Community. It is unforgivable for the Albanian government to be content with initiatives—or, when considering its own nation, with the speed or requests it might have expected the government and people to face in the same circumstances. The letter sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Security Council, asking it only to raise awareness, does not seem very sincere. Macedonia’s Foreign Ministry could have made such a request, but not Albania’s. The tone of someone at risk cannot be the same as that of someone gravely wounded. Likewise, the Foreign Minister’s statement that one should wait for the political months ahead to run their course before moving to a military path sounds like the declaration of an onlooker, not of an institution facing a conflict that is already nearly upon it. The Council of Ministers, faced with the danger to Albanians, should take out its address book of Albania’s friends; in situations like this, besides positions that reek of conformism, we must also be prepared to see that many things are handled differently. Albanian institutions must not evade responsibility at any level of the Albanian institutions and state in the face of the greatest challenge of these days. Raising awareness among Albanians in Albania, after a pause of several decades without such problems, with the concerns they have today, is a duty of all politics and of the Albanian media alike. The opposition seems to be doing its utmost at this historically challenging time for Albanians. Through its actions, it is working to awaken the entire patriotic spirit of the Albanian people.
