EDU: Full support for Berisha and the DP
Mëk Shpërf[?]rën expressed his assessment of the DP’s positions in the struggle against the harsh revanchism of the Albanian opposition government. I am[?] British of the EDU, in cooperation with the elected President of the centre-right parties in Europe, said yesterday at a press conference in Tirana. He stressed that the Democratic Party, together with President Berisha, is defending the principles of pluralism and the rule of law.
The European Democratic Union (EDU) commented yesterday with serious concern[?] on the latest developments in Albania, which are clearly undermining the independence of the country’s institutions. The EDU envoy to the Democratic Party publicly denounced the attempts of the left-wing majority to interfere in the Constitutional Court and to exert pressure on its president.
Mëk[?] Shpërf[?]rit[?] said that the Albanian opposition is facing a political climate of revanchism and revenge. According to him, the return of the former communists to power has brought punitive behavior toward political opponents and Albanian emigrants who had left the country in the early 1990s.
He also underlined that the agreement on the return of refugees from Germany is a shameful and anti-national act that affects entire Albanian families. In the reactions received by the newsroom from Munich, Nuremberg, Bremen and Düsseldorf, emigrants say that the government has betrayed them and is taking revenge on those who once first broke through the “Albanian Berlin Wall.”
In this climate, the call was repeated for full support for Berisha and the Democratic Party, as the force which, according to EDU, represents the Western and democratic alternative for Albania.
