The freedom of March 22 for the return of democracy

Albanians who have come in with five e- of the country's democracy are commemorating this nationwide event with grandeur and joy. After two severe catastrophes that came to the Albanians from the rule of the communist dictatorship. Elbasan on 22 March 1998 has been magnificent. Tens of thousands of people from Elbasan have filled the square bearing the name of our national hero, Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg, to join at midday with the historic leader of the PD and Albanian democracy, Sali Berisha. The center of Elbasan had been filled since the early hours of the morning, and hundreds of thousands of flags of the Democratic Party, as well as red-and-black national flags, had turned Skanderbeg Square into a great popular celebration on the occasion of 22 March. Citizens from the outskirts of Elbasan, but also from many other regions of the country, had taken over the city center to be as close as possible to the leader of pluralism, Prof. Dr. Sali Berisha. Long before 11:00 a.m., the whole city center and the square where the rally was to take place were packed to the brim with people from all corners not only of the Elbasan prefecture, but also from other cities in the country. Enthused by the historic victory of 22 March 1992, but also determined to continue on the road to development and progress, the rally participants were chanting "PD, the majority party" and "We want Albania like all of Europe". To welcome the leader of the PD, Skanderbeg Square and the city’s main boulevard were decorated with numerous inscriptions: "Today, like on 22 March, the PD votes and wins", "We wanted freedom, not misery", "Albania in the hands of Albanians" and "The Nano government, hostage to corruption and the mafia". Meanwhile, the excitement and enthusiasm increased even more after the arrival of the chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, and the other opposition leaders, who were greeted with extraordinary ovations by tens of thousands of rally participants. Yesterday’s rally in Elbasan was a clear demonstration of massive popular support for the Democratic Party and its leader. ON PAGE 3
