Albanians hear words, but not hope
By Bardhyl LONDO
For 7-8 days in a row, the main press in Albania has been occupied with an interview of Prime Minister Fatos Nano. In it, words such as honesty, dedication, sacrifice for the public good, transparency, and even stability have been skillfully interwoven. It has been a clear effort by the official to convince Albanians that not everything in this country is black. Naturally, there are good things, but the doubt is that words and problems do not meet. Words are on one plane, while the problems are on another.
It is clear that the prime minister made a visible effort to gain some credit by admitting that the government has not done everything well; by explaining public dissatisfaction through their “lack of patience”; by giving hope that things will change for the better. All of this was part of a political gesture meant to give people the feeling that control over the situation exists and that the difficulties are temporary.
The same tones have been heard before. Albanians have heard many times about stability, order, law, moralization of the administration, the return of investments, and economic development. If there was sincerity in the interview, it could not be translated into public trust, because everyday life continues to challenge the rhetoric. Unemployment, poverty, insecurity, lack of energy, corruption, and the dysfunction of the state are wounds that cannot be healed with declarations.
In a society exhausted by transition, people need tangible signs of change. Words, however carefully chosen, are not enough. When citizens see that justice does not act, that those responsible for crises remain untouched, that the administration advances through connections and not merit, then hope shrinks. Governance is not measured by the language used in interviews, but by the effect it produces on everyday life.
In this sense, the problem is not that Albanians do not know how to distinguish good from evil. The problem is that they have lost faith that politics is dealing seriously with their troubles. Even when mistakes are admitted, they seem like part of a communication ritual and not the beginning of real correction. So after long interviews, people remain where they were: with unanswered questions, with anxiety for tomorrow, and with the feeling that they are hearing words, but not hope.

The former Minister of the Interior, in the government of national reconciliation, Ali Kazazi is being accused with absurdities. According to the accusation, Ali Kazazi is believed to have hidden under the seat of his car! The moral pardon offered by the state is as grotesque as the accusation itself. The defense asks the court to dismiss the charges as unfounded.
