Kosovo, between Reçak and Drenica By B.SHEZA A massacre in a place where no human foot had ever stepped. Where all Albanians, regardless of age or sex, are killed, hacked with axes and bloodied. In that abyss of hell, in that red stream descending from the village of Reçak in the Shtime district to the Carralevë valley, scenes of terror and horror occurred, compared with which Dante’s hell is a beautiful fairy tale. At midday, the place and the sky were dominated by the noise of the weapons of the Serbian army. Under the rain of bullets and shells, the villagers, women, children and the elderly, tried to find salvation by fleeing through the hills and streams. These unarmed people were ambushed, shot and massacred. Their bodies remained scattered across fields, embankments, fences and in a stream. Some of them were cut with cold weapons. Others were shot at close range. The scene of the event was chilling. Representatives of the OSCE verification mission, journalists and local residents saw the bodies of men, women and children lying in mud and blood. Reçak became a symbol of the cruelty of the Serbian regime against the Albanians of Kosovo. Albania immediately called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and NATO intervention.
