The inglorious end of the socialists
By Sami NEZA
An excessive nervousness is taking hold of the ranks of the Socialist Party of Albania. The first signs have begun to become evident in the way they are reacting to the prospects of resolving the Kosovo crisis. So far, the socialists have been quite careful, conveying the same tone as the coalition partners, including the opportunists who have manipulated Albanian public opinion domestically regarding the crisis in question. This week, as soon as U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright announced that the conditions exist for a NATO attack on the Yugoslavs, the socialist camp erupted in uncontrollable enthusiasm. Some protagonists of this camp, (without delving into the merits and explanations of this enthusiasm), stated quite coincidentally that they had foreseen such a thing, that they had made contacts with their Serbian counterparts, etc. At least that is how it emerged from the general zeal to seize the new positions on the spot and to get as close as possible to the scenario of developments in Kosovo. As soon as the socialists became clear about this alignment, which seems to have completely replaced the previous one, the first signs of nervousness appeared. The opposition asked parliament for full disclosure of the procedure used to make the most recent appointments in government. The socialists and their satellites unjustly rejected this request, showing that not only are they ready to arrogantly justify everything, but they have also had the chance to feel the fear of responsibility more closely than before. This has led to the appearance before the public not only of insecurity, but also of an inexplicable ferocity that points to future tendencies. All this together apparently convinced the socialist camp that its fate is darkening. It is becoming clearer every day that, despite the gesticulations of the officials and the stalling of reforms, Albania is a country completely unprepared to be drawn into a major crisis. For example, no one can even imagine any possibility of our community coping with situations more serious than those of the current limited conflict in Kosovo. Crisis and bad governance in the country have left no room even for the wildest fantasies. So how is it possible that the protagonists of the socialist camp are putting the country in such dangerous positions? Fatos Nano, who told the media that he insists Albania should not participate in the military force that will be deployed in Macedonia, or the Minister of Defense, who most clearly opposed the stationing of NATO aircraft on Albanian territory, are the concrete responsible parties for any development that exceeds the dimensions of the crisis in Albania. The challenges awaiting the country are far more serious than playing roles with our neighbors. Fatos Nano and the sycophants who think like him, even if they are ministers in his government, will bear full responsibility for any dramatic excess inflicted on Albania under the current circumstances. At a time when the voices about the breakup of the governing coalition are growing ever louder, the socialists are sensing their end.
