In a democratic country, where the state police and SHIK are there to protect public and private order and property, and not to place explosives and extort money as is happening today in Albania, two SHIK employees and a driver from this directorate, only a few meters from the house of the former president of the republic, watch them for hours, provoke them and take pictures of the opposition leader’s civilian guards, thus passing hundreds of times day and night in front of Mr. Berisha’s building. This is what residents of the “Ali Demi” neighborhood, where the former chairman of the Democratic Party lives with his family, told “RD”. According to the residents, for three days now the SHIK driver, one of them named Agron Bakiu[?], together with two other employees of this service, named Vëstin Riza and Lila Plloli[?], have been endlessly circling near the building where Sali Berisha lives. The residents of this neighborhood, alarmed, have said that there is also an attempt to open a conflict with the civilian guards near Mr. Berisha’s building. “They move around in a ‘Benz’ vehicle with plate TR 8234 A. They have practically stood guard all day between the International Development Agency and the building where Mr. Berisha lives. From time to time they come close to the entrance of the building and start taking pictures. Several times they have argued with the civilian guards who protect the building. Then they drive toward the center of Tirana and after one or two hours they come back again,” said one resident of the neighborhood. The residents believe that this surveillance carried out by SHIK against Mr. Berisha is done solely for political reasons. “If it were for Mr. Berisha’s security, they should at least talk to the building guards and not act like provocateurs,” said another resident of the neighborhood. According to them, this action has disturbed the area and created tension among the residents. Under these conditions, the citizens living there have asked the state authorities not to use SHIK for political persecution.

The chairman of the Supreme State Audit Institution, Mustafa Xhërku[?], will appear in parliament to discuss the institution’s report in detail and provide explanations and conclusions. According to sources close to the Supreme State Audit Institution, numerous cases of abuse with the tax system and control procedures have been uncovered. In the Ministry of Finance, clientelist ties and diversion of sums are suspected. Experts in this ministry unlawfully benefit from the imposition of fines, the interpretation of tax laws, and the stalling of tax files.

Albania is now seen as a ready-made platform for trafficking illegal migrants. Through a gang of skafists and under the nose of the Italian government, as well as the Albanian one, powerful inflatable boats and skiffs leave our coast every night. Rome rightly and repeatedly denounces the Albanian government over this trafficking. But Majko’s government itself does not stop it. Even more so when part of the skafists are under full police and political protection. Under these conditions, the Otranto tragedy and the new drownings at sea are a direct consequence of a state that does not function. Prime Minister Majko appears closer to the skafists than to their victims, while D’Alema tries to justify Rome’s policy. This situation turns the maritime border into a zone of anxiety for Albanian families.
