At the meeting with the business community organized yesterday by the President of the Republic Rexhep Meidani and in the presence of Prime Minister Pandeli Majko, representatives of Albanian and foreign business expressed serious concerns over the new fiscal package and especially the law on income tax.
Representatives of various companies said that the uncertain political climate, the lack of fair competition, and the rise in the tax burden are forcing investors to think about leaving Albania. They warned that implementing the law in its current form would lead to bankruptcy for part of the industry and a significant drop in investment.
At the meeting, it was emphasized that the fiscal package had been drafted without sufficient consultation with interest groups and that, instead of encouraging production and employment, it could deepen the economic crisis. Businessmen announced that they would send a letter to Prime Minister Majko setting out their objections and proposals.
There was also discussion of public order and security, as well as the need for a more efficient tax administration. Representatives of investors stressed that the lack of institutional stability has damaged the business climate.

Rambouillet provocations
By Sami NEZA
Instead of moving the conflict toward a political solution, the second day of talks on Kosovo in Rambouillet was marked by new tensions and by developments that, according to observers, risked derailing the process. Sources close to the Albanian delegation said that the Serbian side was using delaying tactics, while the international representatives were trying to preserve the negotiating framework.
According to the first comments, some public statements and parallel moves outside the negotiating table created an atmosphere of mistrust and increased concern that Belgrade might use the conference for propaganda, not for compromise. In the texts presented to the delegations, security and political status remained the most contentious points.
Sources close to the Albanian delegation stressed that the stance of the Kosovo side remained united around the need for international guarantees and for a process that would ensure substantial self-government. Meanwhile, contradictory signals were coming from the Serbian camp, which according to the same sources were intended to test the limits of the mediators' patience.
In Rambouillet, the reaction on the ground was also being closely followed, where the humanitarian situation in Kosovo continued to remain grave. Western diplomacy stated that without a reduction in violence and without a real will for agreement, the conference risked losing its meaning.
