Who is Majko complaining to?!
By Edi PALOKA
It was enough for one of the government spokesmen to state that NATO and several other countries are convinced that freedom of the press in Albania is guaranteed, for the PS propagandists to start circling around and proclaiming loudly that now they feel more at ease. That was all they needed. Once again, like people intoxicated by these confirmations, they have lost their heads and rushed toward the only thing they know how to do well; they have rushed toward violence. “Who is Majko complaining to?” – a colleague asked me ironically yesterday, after becoming aware of the statements by the prime minister and the minister of public order made at a meeting organized by the Council of Europe, where the latter complained about the press’s slanders against the government. I had nothing to reply. The only thing I could tell him is that in our country one should no longer be surprised by anything. It is enough to remember and make a very simple comparison: what Albania was like and where it stood when the Socialists came to power, and what it is like today. Murders, trafficking, crimes, drugs, prostitution, poverty and misery. These are the ‘achievements’ of Socialist rule. And while newspapers and television stations speak every day about these things, the government, instead of giving an account, complains about the press. But to whom? To that international opinion which day by day is becoming more convinced of the government’s ties to trafficking and crime? Or to whom else? Today everyone knows that the trafficking of girls, drugs and weapons has become the most profitable business in Albania and that these traffickings could not exist without political support. One need only see how government representatives react whenever the press denounces a case, to understand not only their arrogance, but also the fear that drives them to cover up the truth. Instead of confronting the facts, they attack newspapers, threaten journalists and complain at international tables that they are being defamed. This is the logic of a captured government. And this is why the question ‘Who is Majko complaining to?!’ remains not only ironic, but also tragically real.
