As in the final days of 1996, today Albania is also
experiencing a state close to anarchy. In these
shocking days, people are left unprotected from
crime, while the state either is not able, or does
not care, about the lives of its citizens. Moreover,
it seems these are days of selection: criminals
make the law and the honest person has to stay
indoors and pray that nothing bad happens to
him. What happened in Poshnjë, where a criminal
gang, after executing a family in cold blood and
firing at the police, killing some of its officers,
once again demonstrated that the perpetrators of
these crimes are truly strong. Strong not only
against unprotected people, but also against the
state. It seems that these days they feel safer
than the state. Safer than the people of law. Safer
than police officers and prosecutors. The latter,
at least most of them, are not strong enough to
confront criminals. One only has to remember how
the files of major bank robberies are being closed,
how the sentencing deadlines for criminal gangs
are being dragged out, how the murder of Democratic
MP Azem Hajdari and his escort continues
unpunished, how thieves and murderers are being
released from prison, how traffickers are making
the law...
According to the explanation given to the grave
situation by the Minister of Public Order, Petro
Koçi, these are consequences of the “illness of
democracy”, although the truth is completely different.
This is not a matter of a government paying for
its lack of experience and incompetence, but of a
power closely linked to crime. Freedom, which for
democracy is the freedom of the honest person,
has today acquired for the government the meaning
of freedom for criminals. And since the criminal's
freedom cannot be separated from his right to
kill, it turns into freedom to kill. Likewise, the
state, from a lawful order, turns into an order in
which crime makes the law. Indeed, this is why
Koçi, an innocent man, tries to convince us that
the “illness of democracy” is what is choking us.
He is the Minister of Order of a government that
cannot govern, that cannot protect the citizen's
life, that cannot find the murderers, that cannot
put the bandits in prison, that cannot guarantee
even the lives of its own police officers. This
government, at best, is simply an accomplice of
crime. At worst, it is a partner in it.
Today we address Albanians not only as victims
and as citizens, but as people trying to survive
amid a criminal hell. And we remind the government
that it cannot hide behind the alibi of the
“illness of democracy.” It must answer for the
blood spilled, for the lost lives, for the untroubled
bandits, for the murdered police officers, for the
terrorized citizens. Albanians do not need excuses,
but security. And security begins with the state,
with the police, with justice. Where these are
missing, the face of power blushes. But not the
face of Petro Koçi.
