New political elections, hope for Albanians

On 22 March, a big rally in Skanderbeg Square CITIZENS OF ALBANIA! You are living in the time of a bandit and criminal rule under a prime minister who is emptying the country by fomenting fratricidal conflict. In 22 months he has stolen and plundered the state, the economy and Albanian families together with his mafia. A thief among thieves and a ruffian among ruffians, uneducated to the point of servility, he has turned Albania into a symbol of misery and fear. This man, with no morals and no scruples, with an insatiable thirst for power, is endangering our children’s future. Join the peaceful protest against this regime. On 22 March, at 17:00 in Skanderbeg Square, all of Albania must rise to say NO to tyranny, poverty, crime and deception. JOIN THE PROTEST ON PAGE 7

Smuggling lobbies in the race for the SP

The Albanian opposition has been campaigning for 7-8 days for the elections of 18 June. Encouraged by some polls or by the bravado of certain leftist socialist lobbies that govern the country, it is trying to ignite its campaign by linking the electoral process to events in Kosovo and to socialist figures. Fatos Nano’s statements to French journalists or to the local media, as if they were weighing on the opposition’s shoulders, place it in the same situation as in 1997. Nevertheless, it seems that the verbal involvement in politics of Mr. Gjinushi and others is shaping opposition circles. These days one of the organizers of the communist uprising, former president Alia, has arrived in Tirana. Immediately a wave of discussion has begun about the steps the left will take. Today, 188 days after the killing of the December leader Qemal Stafa[?], the Government turns a blind eye to some left-wing figures who are trying to bring back the atmosphere of 1997. By presenting them as victims or as figures of the front, public television puts itself at the service of this climate. The opposition, made up of the SP, PSD and other allies, seeks to dismantle the figures of the right with the same propaganda mechanism used two years ago. Kosovo has given it a new opportunity to distract public opinion. By Sami NEZA
