Bombs that bring peace

Bombs that bring peace By Sami NEZA After the murderous signal, voices of the U.S., which holds the main credentials of the international coalition against the Serbian regime and violence in Kosovo, proclaim the dark night. The first bombs shake the dark sky over the Balkans, amid the wailing sirens and the roar of explosions. Thus began NATO’s operation with the first strikes against weapons depots, military residences, communication centers and Serbian radars. In the Albanian capital, as in the whole country, people sat with their ears pressed to the radios, eyes on television screens, while their fingers dialed the numbers of relatives, friends and acquaintances across the border. Only in this way could one learn the fate of one’s loved ones, at least until dawn broke. In their eyes, the faces of people disfigured by fatigue and pain burst with uncertainty, anxiety and anger. Mother Kosovo spent her hardest nights under a deadly wave of Serbian hatred and massacre. Thinking of NATO’s first bombings on Albanian soil in Kosovo, people recalled the horrors of the suffering of defenseless Albanians. Towns and villages engulfed in smoke, columns of refugees, terrified children, exhausted old people and women on the roads of suffering. This belated attack by Western democracies against Milosevic’s regime is seen by Albanians as a just and necessary act to stop ethnic cleansing and annihilation. At last the world is reacting not only with words, but also with force. However, the war has only just begun and its cost will be heavy. Kosovo remains exposed to Serbian revenge, while the civilian population faces increased danger. For Albanians, these bombs are not against peace, but against the war imposed by Belgrade. Therefore, even though the night was lit up by the fire of missiles, in many hearts a strange feeling was born: the hope that perhaps this is the only way to end the tragedy. AGJ.
