Independence for Kosovo and international recognition

The non-aligned of official Tirana

By Sami NEZA The Socialist opposition and the Albanian government are giving Kosovo, at the same time, the dimensions of a political problem and, at the same time, a problem to be solved through diplomacy. As a result, they are shifting it away from its real dimensions as a problem of the Albanian people as a whole and, in particular, of the Albanians of Kosovo. If the Serbs in Kosovo carried out various acts of domination over Albanians in Yugoslavia, it was because they had Yugoslavia. If the Serbs destabilize Europe, since their country has become a source of war and catastrophe, this is precisely because Yugoslavism is being destroyed. The Serbs in Serbia used Kosovo as part of their aggression. The politicians governing today in Tirana do not want to look at the Kosovo problem through the eyes of Albanians. They see it through international frameworks and through the need for regional stability. This makes their stance resemble neutrality, which in fact favors the prolongation of the tragedy. Meanwhile, the democratic opposition has repeatedly demanded that the crisis be treated as a national issue and not only as a humanitarian emergency. The position of official Tirana tends to minimize the political role of Albanians in determining their own fate. This logic pushes the Albanian government to accept incomplete formulas that do not address in essence the right of the Albanians of Kosovo to self-determination. Continues on page 4

If the talks with the international community fail, a NATO military intervention will begin. Yesterday’s second attacks at 16:50 caused great damage to the Serbs, including the Ministry of the Interior in Prishtine. A NATO official stated that more than 100 missiles were dropped yesterday on military and police targets in Serbia. On page 4
